It may be an empty, quiet Centurion on Boxing Day, but it is a Boxing Day that has witnessed history. KL Rahul has become the first Indian opener to score a Test hundred in Australia, England and South Africa, after compiling a beautiful century on the first day of the series against the Proteas.
This is arguably India’s best chance to win their first Test series on South African soil, and Rahul went about things the right way in the opening session. He displayed the kind of assurance around off-stump as he did for a lot of the England tour earlier this year, further emphasising just how brilliant he is across formats.
A class player in such form is always reason to switch on the television or mobile device to tune in. Having an opener producing such excellent performances overseas gives India an even greater edge as they look to solidify their position as the world’s number one-ranked Test team.
It has been lean pickings for India’s openers in South Africa over the years. Rahul became the second India opener after Wasim Jaffer to score a Test hundred in South Africa. Jaffer scored his hundred 14 years ago, and India have since toured the nation three times with no such milestone for their openers until Rahul produced the goods on the first day of the 2021 series.
