Cricket News: Calls grow louder for Nathan Ellis to be Australia regular over Kane Richardson | Is Ellis in Australia’s World cup squad?
Australia went down in their opening T20I against England by eight runs at Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday. However, it was pacer Nathan Ellis who grabbed all the eyeballs with his incredible returns of three wickets for 20 runs in his four-over spell. Ellis dismissed the key trio of Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali and Sam Curran to make a strong case for him to be drafted into the team’s scheme of things leading up to the World Cup.
The 28-year-old is not a part of 15-member squad for the mega-tournament. Ellis has picked 15 wickets in his five T20Is so far. His economy rate is a partly 6.40 and he has taken 40.54 per cent of his team’s wickets in these matches. His promising performances have led many to call for him to replace Kane Richardson in the Australian squad. Here are some of the Twitter reactions on this issue since the game on Sunday.
Fans call for Nathan Ellis to replace the likes of Kane Richardson – and even Pat Cummins – in Australia T20I colours
“Nathan Ellis was outstanding on a really good batting surface … he was unbelievable. He’s a fantastic bowler. He’s done it at domestic level, he’s done it every chance he’s had with Australia. He’s been so close a lot of times,” Australian skipper Aaron Finch spoke highly of the promising pacer in the post-match presentation ceremony.
“The fact he keeps fronting up, he’s been 12th man on a lot of tours, the fact that every time he gets an opportunity (he takes it). He trains the house down, he’s just a brilliant person to have around the team,” Finch further lauded the 28-year-old’s work ethic.
Though highly unlikely, it remains to be seen if Australia decides to shake up things in their squad just before the tournament begins in order to defend their T20 World Cup title. The two teams will next meet at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Wednesday for the second T20I of the series.
