Since the start of 2023, 200+ totals are up by more than 200% compared to the previous four seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Six-hitting has reached new levels, with batters – who are becoming more skilled by the day – launching even good deliveries into the crowd.
The IPL has been blessed with many outstanding cricketers since its first season in 2008. Here is a look at the top five six-hitters by players in a single IPL season.
Which player hit the most sixes in a single IPL season?
| Player | Number of sixes | Team | Year |
| Chris Gayle | 59 | RCB | 2012 |
| Andre Russell | 52 | KKR | 2019 |
| Chris Gayle | 51 | RCB | 2013 |
| Jos Buttler | 45 | RR | 2022 |
| Chris Gayle | 44 | RCB | 2011 |
The great Chris Gayle features three times in the top five as of April 2026. The West Indian hit a total of 154 sixes between 2011 and 2013. 17 came in one innings during his memorable 175* off 66 balls against Pune Warriors on April 23, 2013.
Andre Russell (52 in 2019) and Jos Buttler (45 in 2022) are also in the top five. The question now, however, is how long until an Indian player breaks into the top five? On current form, it won’t be too long.
Wonder boy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already smashed 37 sixes in nine matches in IPL 2026. The 15-year-old needs just eight more to break into the top five. Also, at his current rate of 4.11 per match, he will sit just two sixes behind Gayle’s record at 59 by the end of the regular season.
