Jasprit Bumrah has made a strong return to ODI cricket, taking a wicket in the fifth over of a very economical spell against England at Edgbaston. Playing his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup Final, Bumrah hit his straps right away, conceding just 17 runs in his first seven overs and taking the big wicket of Harry Brook.

Bumrah dismissed Brook with a delivery in the channel. The great fast bowler generated extra bounce off the surface, and Brook, looking to run the ball through the offside, could only guide it into the grateful hands of Rohit Sharma at slip.

Jasprit Bumrah waits 32 months to take 150th ODI wicket

Bumrah, due to workload management and injury concerns, hadn’t played an ODI since India’s heartbreaking day in November 2023. His performance in the first ODI at Edgbaston is a sight to behold for India fans with the World Cup a little over a year away.

With Brook’s wicket, Bumrah (90 matches) became the third-fastest Indian behind Mohammed Shami (80 matches) and Kuldeep Yadav (88 matches) to take 150 ODI wickets. Bumrah has reached the mark at an average of 23.50 and superb economy of 4.57.

To show how good Bumrah has been, Shami in comparison reached the milestone at an average of 25.3 and economy of 5.62. Kuldeep had very similar numbers with an average of 25.6 and economy of 5.11.

Bumrah’s wicket was part of a dominant run of play for India in Edgbaston. England were moving along nicely at 61/0 in the 13th over before falling to 80/5.

At the time of writing, England are 93/5 after 20 overs with Joe Root (8*) and Will Jacks (9*) at the crease.
