Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav will play his first county cricket game when he joins Yorkshire for the remainder of the English domestic season. The Indian spinner will feature in both the One Day Cup and County Championship.
This call comes at a crucial juncture in Kuldeep’s career following a disappointing white ball tour of Ireland and England where he was left out of the playing XI in all ten matches despite being part of the squad.
Kuldeep to Play One-Day Cup Before County Championship Debut Alongside Sri Lanka Tour
Kuldeep will be available for Yorkshire’s One Day Cup campaign, with five matches scheduled to be played between July 24 and August 2.
Following those fixtures, he will return to India ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka in August starting from the 15th where he is expected to be in the squad at least given the conditions in Colombo & Galle. After the Sri Lanka trip, he will return to Yorkshire for the club’s final three County Championship games of the season in September.
The arrangement will give Kuldeep valuable experience in English conditions and keep him available for India’s international assignments.
Speaking after the signing was confirmed, Kuldeep expressed his excitement about representing Yorkshire, “I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of playing in English conditions and after speaking with the management, I became really excited to join up with the team. I’m looking forward to making a positive contribution during my time at Headingley,” he said.
Opportunity After Frustrating UK Tour
Kuldeep remained fit throughout the tour but didn’t get a game in any of India’s ten white-ball matches. Even after Washington Sundar was ruled out through injury, Kuldeep was still on the bench, which drew a lot of debate among former cricketers and fans.
The county stint is now expected to give regular match practice ahead of a busy international schedule. This will be Kuldeep’s fourth trip to England but he has had only few opportunities in red-ball cricket. He has made only one Test appearance in the country – during the Lord’s Test in 2018 when he bowled just nine overs.
His last Test assignment was against Afghanistan in June. In 18 Tests he has taken 79 wickets at 22.35, which is a testament to the fact that he has been very effective whenever he has been given the opportunity.
