The BCCI is likely to re-examine the injury management system of the Indian men’s cricket team, which is currently followed at the Centre of Excellence (COE), after a string of fitness concerns that have affected players availability in recent months.

A report in the Times of India stated that the current team management is likely to give its feedback on the head physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain, who replaced Nitin Patel in 2022.

This year has seen a couple of injury concerns for the Indian team. Jasprit Bumrah is the latest player to be ruled out and Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy have also sat out matches due to injuries. Repeated setbacks have raised concern in the team management.

Injury woes are becoming an area of concern

The report said the issue had generated much attention on India’s recent white ball tour of England. According to reports, captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir were unhappy at not being able to field their best XI on a number of occasions due to injuries.

Gill touched upon the issues of last-minute fitness concerns after India’s loss at Lord’s. “It does become difficult when a player reports a fitness problem on the morning of the match, as it impacts team planning,” he said.

“If we keep the World Cup in mind, we have to play 11 matches in a row. And here the players are not even able to finish 2-3 series of matches. So somewhere it is missing that our players are not able to play matches continuously.”

Gill also said players needed to work on their general fitness.

BCCI puts Head Physio Kamesh Jain under scanner

The report added that BCCI’s Centre of Excellence has also been in the spotlight for the way it has managed player fitness and rehabilitation. The head physio Kamlesh Jain is also rumoured to be under scanner while some senior Indian players have sought medical advice from specialists outside the BCCI system.

There was also talk of some players not being entirely happy with the change in the strength and conditioning department since Adrian Le Roux replaced previous coach Soham Desai.

Repeated injuries have made it difficult for the captain and coach to settle on a preferred combination. A source following the developments said, “The role of the head physiotherapist and the experts at the Centre of Excellence is being looked into as the team has not been able to field its first choice playing eleven regularly”.

The source also stated that it becomes hard to plan the right combination when even the 15-member squad is not fully available due to injuries.
