Sunrisers Leeds recorded the highest team total in the history of The Hundred on Tuesday evening as they secured a high-scoring victory over London Spirit at Headingley.

Having been inserted into bat, the hosts blitzed their way to a staggering total of 241-2 from their 100 balls with South African opener Ryan Rickelton making an unbeaten 94 off 42 balls, including six fours and eight sixes.

His opening partner, Australia white-ball captain Mitch Marsh, continued his strong form in his debut Hundred season with 76 off 37 balls to move to the top of the run-scoring charts with 290 at an average of 58.

Meanwhile local hero Harry Brook, who arrived at the crease with the score already 148-1 after 65 balls, continued the carnage and went on to smash a record-equalling 15-ball fifty with an astonishing display of power hitting on a flat pitch to finish with a strike rate of 305.55.

Adam Zampa, Jamie Overton and Liam Livingstone conceded a combined 93 runs off 25 balls bowled.

A monster six over the mid-wicket region from England’s limited overs captain eclipsed the previous highest score of 226-4 set by Oval Invincibles (now MI London) against Welsh Fire last season.

Despite slumping to 56-5 in the chase, London Spirit made a commendable recovery with David Willey’s unbeaten 46-ball 83 guiding his side to 204-6 – just the ninth score in excess of 200 in the competition and meant the match aggregate of 445 runs was also a record for the Hundred.

There has been a strong contest between bat and ball throughout the competition, with an average first innings score of 156, though all three of the games played at Headingley have seen scores in excess of 180.

The Sun Group, owners of IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad, took operational control of the Leeds-based franchise as part of the sale process ahead of the sixth edition of The Hundred.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have built a reputation in recent seasons for their destructive batting approach, holding five of the top six IPL totals – 287-3 in 2024 the highest – as they chase an elusive score of 300.

Their Betway SA20 branch, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, have won three out of four titles.

The 37-run win over London Spirit moved Sunrisers Leeds up to fourth in the table and still firmly in the mix to reach the knockout stages with three games to play – the franchise, under the previous name Northern Superchargers, finished in the top three for the first time last year.
