Campbell Thompson destroyed Bangladesh on the third day of the tour match, taking 8/25 to lead CA XI to victory by an innings and 37 runs. In the process, the Tigers were rolled for 54 – a huge concern just days out from the first Test against Australia.
Thompson, who has just one First Class match under his belt, produced a terrific display of swing bowling to dismantle the visitors’ lineup. The 22-year-old took two wickets on the second evening and followed it up with six in rapid time on the third morning.

It was 11 overs of carnage as Thompson tested the Bangladeshis on the front foot, despite the need to bring the length back a little in the second innings.
On day two, he had Shadman Islam caught off an attempted pull before dismissing Mominul Haque through the gate. On the third morning, Soumya Sarkar (caught at slip), Mushfiqur Rahim (bowled), Najmul Hossain Shanto (LBW), Tanzid Hasan (LBW), Taskin Ahmed (bowled) and Ebadot Hossain (bowled) had no answers for the left-arm quick.
“To clean it up this morning, I had a clear process – just try to use the new ball, swing it and hit the stumps – and I was lucky enough to get a few wickets,” he said, as quoted by cricket.com.au.
“The length we had to bowl in the second innings was probably a bit shorter than in the first innings – so just dragging it back a bit, hitting the top of the stumps, and (keeping those) clear processes was the main goal.
“I feel like I’m a new-ball bowler, so I’m just trying to swing the ball and hit the stumps, and I got lucky this time.”
Thompson plays for South Australia in domestic cricket. He made his First Class debut earlier this year, taking 2/16 and 1/28 against Queensland.
The pace bowler only recently recovered from a torn hamstring, and he made his selection count. He was one of CA XI’s outstanding performers against Bangladesh, along with Teague Wyllie (130) and Corey Rocchiccioli (eight wickets).
