VVS Laxman has been named the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team for the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi Nagoya, Japan. India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports officially announced the decision on September 2. Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and newly appointed fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh will assist Laxman.
This appointment follows a separate set of coaches for the Indian men’s team at the Asian Games. The tournament’s dates clash with India’s home ODI series against West Indies, which will be played from September 27 to October 3. Gautam Gambhir and the regular senior coaches will lead the ODI squad, while Laxman will lead the T20I squad in Japan.
VVS Laxman to head India at Asian Games in Japan
Laxman is no stranger when it comes to coaching India in the absence of the main coaching staff. He also worked with the Indian team at the 2024 Asian Games, where the men’s team bagged the gold medal. Since then he was tasked with a few assignments as an interim head coach including India’s T20I tour of Zimbabwe earlier this year.
India are expected to field a strong men’s team in the Asian Games this time. The Shreyas Iyer-led side will have vice captain Tilak Varma along with Jasprit Bumrah and young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The women’s side, however, will continue with its usual coaching set-up. Amol Muzumdar will continue as the head coach while Aavishkar Salvi will be the bowling coach and Munish Bali the fielding coach. Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the women’s side with Smriti Mandhana as vice captain. The Asian Games cricket matches will be held from September 17 to October 3.
