The BCCI has decided to return the IPL auction to India for 2027 edition of the league, ending the recent trend of conducting the event abroad. The IPL Governing Council made the decision at its meeting on Tuesday, September 15, according to Cricbuzz. The 2027 auction will be a mini auction, and the mega auction scheduled for next year could again take place outside India.
The last time the event was held in India was in 2023 in Kochi. Since then, the auctions have been held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Jeddah. After franchises expressed concerns about the difficulties of sending their teams and support staff overseas for a mini auction, the decision has been made to return to India.

Now, BCCI is expected to finalise an Indian city to host the auction. Availability of suitable accommodation will be an important factor in making the decision, especially as the wedding season falls between October and December. The board needs over 100 rooms for the franchises and their delegations for a couple of nights.
IPL Auction 2027 to be held in India, and impact player rule still remains under consideration
The Governing Council has not made a final decision on the future of the Impact Player rule. Another meeting is scheduled for next month, when the Governing Council will revisit the matter. Most franchises opposed the rule’s survival. But some teams have pointed out that they put their squads together with the Impact Player rule in mind. They feel scrapping the rule straight away could impact on the way in which teams have planned their squads.
The franchises have therefore suggested postponing the decision until next year. The BCCI will take it up again in the next council meeting and then take a final decision on it.
In a 2024 CricBlog IPL survey, 51% of the respondents voted “no” to keeping the impact player rule. Fast forward a few years, and the rule continues to divide opinion.
