Amid all the talk of the context of an ODI played four days after a T20 World Cup Final, it was Dawid Malan and Steve Smith who provided a reminder of how classy batting can still be a treat to watch in this format.

Both number threes were outstanding in Adelaide, and will be looking for more of the same on Saturday. The action moves to the famous SCG on what is forecast to be clear and beautiful afternoon, with Australia seeking to complete an expected series win given England are suffering a cricketing hangover having just won a major white-ball title.

But, Jos Buttler’s team showed fight in the first ODI. Dawid Malan’s century to take England to 287 was pleasing. The bowlers hung in despite Australia’s top three having a day out. Also, the tourists have the option of strengthening their XI after a number of first-teamers were left out of the first match.

However, they will have to overcome Steve Smith in particular, who said he’s feeling the best he has for six years. Watch out.

AUS vs ENG 2nd ODI Possible Playing XI

Australia may look to play two spinners again. So, Josh Hazlewood may miss out for the second straight game.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Travis Head, 3. Steve Smith, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Alex Carey (wk), 6. Cameron Green, 7. Marcus Stoinis, 8. Ashton Agar, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Pat Cummins (c), 11. Adam Zampa

England rested a number of key players for the first match. They may look to bring in at least two of Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes.

England: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Phil Salt, 3. Dawid Malan, 4. James Vince, 5. Sam Billings, 6. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 7. Moeen Ali/Liam Dawson, 8. Sam Curran/Luke Wood, 9. Chris Jordan, 10. David Willey/Adil Rashid, 11. Olly Stone/Chris Woakes

AUS vs ENG ODI Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Australia:

  • Since the start of 2020, Steve Smith has struck 992 runs in 18 ODIs at an average of 66.1 and strike rate of 93.1. This included two magnificent 62-ball centuries against India at the SCG.
  • In fact, Smith loves batting at Sydney. In 14 innings, he has struck 849 runs at an average of 60.64 and strike rate of 101.92, with four centuries.
  • David Warner also loves batting at the SCG in ODIs: 16 inns, 953 runs, avg. 59.56, SR 100.10, 7 50s, 3 100s.
  • Travis Head as an opener in ODIs: 16 inns, 752 runs, avg. 47.00, SR 106.21. This includes eight 50+ scores.
  • Adam Zampa bowled nicely in Adelaide (3/55), and he should find some assistance on the SCG track. In six ODIs on this ground, Zampa has taken 14 wickets at an average of 24.42 and economy of 6.00.
  • Pat Cummins was superb in the first powerplay in Adelaide. In eight ODIs at Sydney, Cummins has taken 14 wickets at an average of 29.57 and economy of 5.83.

England:

  • Dawid Malan made the perfect return to the England team. He won man of the match in the first ODI for his classy 134.
  • Jason Roy has good numbers against Australia (874 runs, avg. 41.61, SR 112.77), but has to guard against the in-coming delivery. He tends to leave a gap between bat and pad, and Australia will be looking to exploit it.
  • James Vince has plenty of BBL experience at the SCG. In 18 matches, Vince has scored 573 runs at an average of 38.20 and strike rate of 139.08.
  • Jos Buttler looked in good touch in the first ODI (29 runs in a 52-run stand with Malan) before chipping one to long-off. Against Australia, Buttler has scored 967 runs in 31 innings at an average of 40.29 and strike rate of 104.76.
  • Sam Curran recently won player of the tournament in the T20 World Cup. In the T20I series against Australia before the tournament, Curran ripped through Australia particularly at the death. Also, in the WC itself, Curran took nine wickets for 70 runs in 64 balls in the death overs.
  • Adil Rashid has the most wickets of any current England player in ODIs vs Australia: 24 matches, 42 wickets, avg. 30.47, econ. 5.78. He should enjoy the SCG conditions, if picked.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Mitchell Starc has taken just 12 wickets in 13 ODIs at the SCG at an average of 43.75.
  • Travis Head has made six half-centuries in 11 ODIs against England.
  • Chris Woakes has enjoyed success against David Warner in ODIs: 135 balls bowled, 89 runs conceded, four dismissals.
  • Alex Carey is Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in ODIs in 2022 (414, avg. 34.50) behind Warner (430, avg. 39.09) and Smith (424, avg. 70.66).

SCG Pitch Report and Weather

The SCG surface offered assistance for pacers and spinners in the recent World Cup, but batsmen also had a good time of things. This will be the first ODI on the ground since Australia vs India in 2020, where Steve Smith scored 104 off 64 balls in Australia’s mammoth total of 389/4. India responded with 338/9.

A glorious day is forecast in Sydney, with a top of 25 degrees and sunny weather.
