Amid all the talk of the context of an ODI played four days after a T20 World Cup Final, it was Dawid Malan and Steve Smith who provided a reminder of how classy batting can still be a treat to watch in this format.
Both number threes were outstanding in Adelaide, and will be looking for more of the same on Saturday. The action moves to the famous SCG on what is forecast to be clear and beautiful afternoon, with Australia seeking to complete an expected series win given England are suffering a cricketing hangover having just won a major white-ball title.
But, Jos Buttler’s team showed fight in the first ODI. Dawid Malan’s century to take England to 287 was pleasing. The bowlers hung in despite Australia’s top three having a day out. Also, the tourists have the option of strengthening their XI after a number of first-teamers were left out of the first match.
However, they will have to overcome Steve Smith in particular, who said he’s feeling the best he has for six years. Watch out.
