Injury wreck India will take on Australia at their fortress, The Gabba, for the final Test of what has been an enthralling, gripping series. After India’s 36-all out at Adelaide, incredibly, everything is now on the line as the series sits finely poised at 1-1 following the draw at the SCG.

Team India is coming with confidence after some superb batting in the fourth innings in Sydney. However, injuries are a big concern for the visitors. Ravindra Jadeja is already out of the final Test, and still, there is no clarity over Jasprit Bumrah, who remains in doubt. Some reports suggest Shardul Thakur might replace Jasprit Bumrah. Ironically, Shardul Thakur only played 1 Test and just bowled 10 Balls before he got injured.

Meanwhile, Australia was on top of their game in the third Test, but they failed to cross the final hurdle, which could create some additional nerves given that they have been the more favoured side this series. Also, Steve Smith and Tim Paine were under scrutiny for their on-field behavior. The duo will try to put a performance in the crucial Test and leave that behind, which adds to the spectacle and drama of a Border-Gavaskar series.

Australia loves playing at The Gabba, and they have not lost a Test match since 1988, which puts them ahead before a ball is bowled. As they say, controversy brings more eyeballs, and the Brisbane Test is must watch for sure.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Australia:

  • Steven Smith: The 2nd world-ranked Test Batsmen silenced his critics in fitting style by smashing a hundred and a half-century in his two innings at the SCG. Although his on-field tactics grabbed many eyeballs, he would like to put up a show again and get Australia the series victory.
  • Marnus Labuschagne: Consistency and Marnus Labuschagne go hand in hand. The Aussie Batsman has aggregated 293 runs at a solid average of 48.83 and is still to score a century. Given that he plays most of his cricket at the Gabba, he would love to get a big one here.
  • Josh Hazlewood loves playing at The Gabba and has picked 23 wickets in 5 matches here. The extra bounce pays heaps of dividends for the tall fast bowler. He will be X-factor for the host in this Test.

India:

  • Rohit Sharma looked in great touch in the third Test but failed to get a big score. In the absence of big guns, the onus will be on Rohit to score some big runs and give the advantage to the Indian team. He also scored a century in an ODI during the 2016 tour.
  • Shubman Gill has impressed on the tour with his positive batting approach at the top of the order. He has aggregated 161 runs in four innings so far at an impressive average of 53.67.
  • Ajinkya Rahane: After scoring a magnificent century in the second Test, the skipper could not do much in the third Test. However, The Stand-In Captain has carried the team well and would like to finish on a high. He also scored 90 runs at The Gabba during his last Test.

Stats and Facts

  • Australia has not lost a Test at The Gabba since 1988.
  • India have never won a Test at the Gabba (six attempts).
  • The last time India played Australia on this ground was in 2014. Steve Smith scored 133 and Josh Hazlewood took 5/68 as Australia chased 130 with four wickets remaining.

Possible Playing 11

Marcus Harris will replace the injured Will Pucovski.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Marcus Harris, 3. Marnus Labuschagne, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Travis Head/Matthew Wade, 6. Cameron Green, 7. Tim Paine (c & wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Nathan Lyon, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Chaos for India as more injuries have hampered their chances this series. But, their fight has been magnificent. Jasprit Bumrah is in doubt with a side strain, after Ravindra Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari were ruled out with injuries.

India: 1. Shubman Gill, 2. Rohit Sharma, 3. Cheteshwar Pujara, 4. Ajinkya Rahane (c), 5. Mayank Agarwal/Wriddhiman Saha, 6. Rishabh Pant, 7. Shardul Thakur, 8. Ravichandran Ashwin, 9. T Natarajan/Jasprit Bumrah, 10. Mohammed Siraj, 11. Navdeep Saini

Gabba Pitch and Weather Report

A photo from cricket.com.au a few days before the Test showed a slight greenish tinge on the track. By the time the match starts, the track should be a sporting one, with bounce for the bowlers and the opportunity for free-flowing strokeplay for the batsmen.

There is a chance of thunderstorms on day two and showers on days four and five.

Match Prediction

India’s fighting spirit has been incredible. However, they look very depleted now. Australia, as a result, should win this Test and take the series 2-1 (weather permitting).
