AUS vs NZ 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | AUS vs NZ 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction Today | Cairns Pitch Report
When it comes to wake up calls, there is none bigger than the one Australia received on Saturday after a shock defeat against Zimbabwe. The batting was so diabolical it reeked of complacency, and despite the bowlers’ best efforts, 141 is not a score often defended in ODi cricket.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that the home side has the chance to rectify that horror show just a few days later, this time against New Zealand in the first international at Cairns since 2004. Much of the focus is on the struggling Aaron Finch, who was dismissed thrice in as many matches by left-armer Richard Ngarava. Trent Boult would certainly be looking back at those wickets with great enthusiasm.
With no bilateral ODI series scheduled between these teams in the 2023-27 Future Tours Programme, this is New Zealand’s biggest and possibly final chance for a while to win a Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in Australia. They have not won an ODI in Australia since 2009, embarking on a seven-match losing streak including a 71-run defeat just before the world shut down in March 2020. As seen against Zimbabwe, as well as in series losses to Pakistan (2-1) and Sri Lanka (3-2) earlier this year, Australia’s ODI form is up and down.
AUS vs NZ 1st ODI Possible Playing XI
Australia will likely guard against panic after the disappointing loss to Zimbabwe. There will be a decision to make around whether they will play Ashton Agar or another pacer.
Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Aaron Finch (c), 3. Steve Smith, 4. Alex Carey (wk), 5. Marcus Stoinis, 6. Cameron Green, 7. Glenn Maxwell, 8. Ashton Agar/Sean Abbott, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood
New Zealand will go in with a similar team to the one that beat West Indies 2-1 last month. One question they may have is whether they play an extra spin option.
New Zealand: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Finn Allen, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Devon Conway, 5. Tom Latham (wk), 6. Daryl Mitchell, 7. James Neesham/Michael Bracewell, 8. Mitchell Santner, 9. Tim Southee, 10. Lockie Ferguson, 11. Trent Boult
AUS vs NZ Head-to-Head Stats in ODIs & Key Players
Australia:
- If Aaron Finch is to bounce back, he’s going to have to do it against a team he has a poor record against. He has scored just 172 runs in ten ODIs against New Zealand at an average of 17.20.
- David Warner fares better against the Black Caps. The left-hander has scored 614 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of 47.23 and strike rate of 99.03.
- Warner has scored 135 runs off 146 balls (avg. 67.50) against Trent Boult in ODIs. He also has good numbers against Southee in this format: 86 balls, 90 runs, one dismissal.
- Steve Smith looked in good touch in the Zimbabwe ODIs, with two unbeaten 40+ scores. In 11 innings against New Zealand, Smith has scored 364 runs at an average of 40.44 and strike rate of 87.29. This includes a score of 164.
- Mitchell Starc became the quickest to reach 200 wickets in ODIs. He has produced some memorable performances against the Black Caps, and has an impressive 23 wickets in 10 matches against them at an average of 17.52.
- Adam Zampa was named player of the series against Zimbabwe for his six wickets. Watch out for his battle against Kane Williamson, particularly with the use of the wrong-un. He dismissed Williamson with this delivery in the 2020 ODI between the teams.
- Josh Hazlewood has taken 24 wickets in 10 ODIs against New Zealand at an average of 20.75.
New Zealand:
- Martin Guptill has the most runs in AUS-NZ ODIs out of any current player (825) with an average of 34.37. The opener has good numbers against Hazlewood (130 balls, 118 runs, one dismissal) and Starc (110 balls, 81 runs, one dismissal).
- Kane Williamson has also been dismissed just once by Starc (69 balls, 53 runs), but he has found the going tougher against Hazlewood: 79 balls faced, 42 runs scored, two dismissals.
- Overall, Williamson has scored 475 runs in 14 ODIs against Australia at an average of 39.58.
- Finn Allen has made a 25+ score in five of his seven knocks in ODIs. This includes 96 in the recent tour of West Indies on a tricky surface.
- Finch was all at sea against Richard Ngarava in the Zimbabwe series. So, expect Trent Boult to have a say. In fact, Boult has dismissed Finch four times in 62 balls in ODIs, conceding just 36 runs in the process.
- Also, Boult has a magnificent record against Australia: 12 ODIs, 29 wickets, avg. 19.24, SR 22.6, 2 5-wicket hauls.
- Mitchell Santner was named player of the series in West Indies last month for his four wickets at an average of 21.00 and economy of just 3.42. Against Australia, Santner has taken an impressive 15 wickets in nine innings at an average of 21.86 and economy of 4.59. The left-arm spinner may enjoy some help on the Cairns track.

Cazalys Stadium Cairns Pitch Report and Weather
There has been rain in Cairns recently, which may result in a slower surface. Conditions for this match look good, with partly cloudy weather forecast and just a 20% chance of rain according to bom.gov.au.
This will be the first ODI at this ground since way back in 2003 when Australia hosted Bangladesh. The Tigers were bowled out for just 105 and 147 in those games, owing more to the difference in quality between the teams rather than any pitch demons. The last top-level match was in WBBL 2019, where Brisbane Heat chased down Sydney Thunder’s 171 with three balls to spare. Beth Mooney scored 102 off 55 balls on a good batting deck.
