It’s Test season. After a plethora of white-ball cricket, it’s time to show some love to the game’s most traditional format.

However, the key question is whether the shift in format can lead to a shift in fortune for West Indies. After their dismal showing in the T20 World Cup, the general feel is they will struggle in the Tests as well. Their batting, despite the emergence of the very talented Tagenarine Chanderpaul, looks light against Australia’s established attack.

So, how well the Windies apply pressure with the ball is arguably their best chance to get a foothold in the contest. The Perth track offers plenty of pace and bounce, so eyes will be on the pace attack in terms of how well they can use the help on offer.

For Australia, not only is a Test win up for grabs, but crucial World Test Championship points. The hosts are right in with a chance of making next year’s finale. But, with a tough tour of India next year, they can ill-afford any slip ups here against a team that has not won a Test downunder since 1997. Steve Smith is feeling good, while runs up top for David Warner and Usman Khawaja will set the side up in what is forecast to be warm, dry conditions right throughout the match.

AUS vs WI 1st Test Possible Playing XIs

Australia’s XI looks settled. Cameron Green will offer the fourth seam bowling option, which allows Nathan Lyon to play, should Australia choose.

With hot, dry weather forecast for the Test, Lyon may have a role to play with some bounce on offer, too.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Usman Khawaja, 3. Marnus Labuschagne, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Travis Head, 6. Cameron Green, 7. Alex Carey (wk), 8. Pat Cummins (c), 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Nathan Lyon, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Kraigg Brathwaite will lead West Indies. The skipper has a vital role to play with the bat, given his ability to occupy the crease. Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of Shivnarine, could make his debut after some great recent form.

West Indies: 1. Kraigg Brathwaite (c), 2. Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 3. Nkrumah Bonner, 4. Devon Thomas, 5. Jermaine Blackwood, 6. Joshua Da Silva (wk), 7. Roston Chase, 8. Jason Holder, 9. Alzarri Joseph, 10. Kemar Roach, 11. Jayden Seales

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Steve Smith averages a whopping 165.67 in five Tests vs West Indies, including two fifties and two hundreds. In Australia, he has hit 214 runs in three innings at an average of 214.
  • David Warner averages 38.08 in eight Tests vs West Indies. In four Tests in Australia, the average bumps up to 75.3. Overall at home, Warner averages 60.30 in 50 Tests.
  • Usman Khawaja is Australia’s leading run-scorer in Tests this year. He has struck 888 runs in 13 innings at an average of 98.66, with three fifties and four hundreds.
  • Expect Pat Cummins to be right in the thick of the action against a fragile batting lineup. Australia have played five of their seven Tests this year in Asia, and yet Cummins has taken 25 scalps at an average of 25.00.
  • In 24 home Tests, Cummins has taken 113 wickets at an average of 20.76.
  • Mitchell Starc has taken 12 wickets in three Tests vs West Indies at an average of 17.92. Josh Hazlewood has taken 20 scalps in five matches at an average of 16.10.

West Indies:

  • Kraigg Brathwaite averages just 23.50 in eight Tests vs Australia. But, he faces 53.29 deliveries per innings. Can he build on this? The Windies need a long innings from their captain.
  • Earlier this year, Brathwaite faced the most balls in a Test by a West Indian.
  • Joshua Da Silva will be key with his application. The keeper-batsman made scores of 25 (80) and 52* (124) in the tour match.
  • Kemar Roach’s experience is vital for West Indies. The pacer will be looking to improve on his record against Australia, which reads: 10 Tests, 28 wickets, avg. 39.92, econ. 3.83.
  • Alzarri Joseph took 4/65 and 1/32 in the tour match. The fast bowler is one of the Windies’ key weapons in this series.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Australia are unbeaten in their last 17 Tests against West Indies.
  • The Windies’ last win against Australia was the famous chase of 418 in 2003.

Optus Stadium Perth Pitch Report and Weather

The Optus Stadium tracks were fast and bouncy in the recent T20 World Cup. The surface was looking green a few days out from the match, but most of the grass will be trimmed. Nonetheless, it looks a quick surface.

The weather forecast is for warm and sunny conditions right throughout the match. Wednesday’s forecast is for sunny and 31 degrees, so batting first looks the way to go despite the likely assistance for the bowlers.
