Bangladesh’s first match of the 2022 T20 World Cup is of huge importance. Since the start of last year’s tournament, the Tigers have won just six of 27 T20Is, with four coming against Oman, Papua New Guinea and United Arab Emirates, all of whom are still in their developmental stage in international cricket.
Also, when you consider that Bangladesh have won just one match against a Test-playing nation in T20 World Cup history, you get the feeling that they need to make a statement here to set the tone. Victory against Netherlands won’t improve that record, but it will be one to savour given the Dutch have been strong in this World Cup, particularly with the ball.
Led by the likes of Paul van Meekeren, Bas de Leede and Tim Pringle, Netherlands conceded just 6.56 per over in round one. Granted, the Hobart surface will be more conducive for batting than Geelong, but the Dutch have the resources to keep the Bangladeshi lineup – which often struggles to hit sixes – in check.
BAN vs NED Possible Playing XI
According to ESPNcricinfo Bangladesh correspondent Mohammad Isam, Bangladesh could go in with a Soumya Sarkar-Litton Das opening combination.
Bangladesh: 1. Soumya Sarkar, 2. Litton Das, 3. Shakib Al Hasan, 4. Afif Hossain, 5. Yasir Ali, 6. Nurul Hasan (wk), 7. Mosaddek Hossain, 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz/Mustafizur Rahman, 9. Taskin Ahmed, 10. Shoriful Islam 11. Hasan Mahmud
Netherlands look settled and may stick with the same XI that faced Sri Lanka. However, Roelof van der Merwe may be in some doubt due to a leg injury concern.
Netherlands: 1. Max O’Dowd, 2. Vikramjit Singh, 3. Bas de Leede, 4. Colin Ackermann, 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Scott Edwards (c & wk), 7. Tim Pringle, 8. Roelof van der Merwe 9. Timm van der Gugten, 10. Fred Klaassen 11. Paul van Meekeren

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats
Bangladesh:
- Shakib Al Hasan hit form in the recent NZ Tri-Series. He struck 70 (44) and 68 (42) in his last two matches.
- Against Netherlands between 2012 and 2016, Shakib scored just 17 runs in three knocks. He did take six wickets in those games, highlighting his all-round quality.
- Litton Das is crucial for Bangladesh. He scored 142 runs in four matches in the NZ Tri-Series at an average of 35.50 and strike rate of 142.00. Also, Litton has scored the most runs in T20Is for the Tigers in 2022: 417, avg. 29.78, SR 139.46.
- Afif Hossain in T20Is in 2022: 16 inns, 405 runs, avg. 31.15, SR 123.47. Expect Bangladesh to bat Afif in his preferred position of number four.
- Watch out for Hasan Mahmud. The seamer impressed in the NZ Tri-Series, where he took four wickets in three matches at an economy of 7.91 and strike rate of 18.0.
Netherlands:
- Max O’Dowd comes into this match in form. He scored 23, 35 and 71* in round one, batting through the innings against Sri Lanka.
- Bas de Leede is a factor, as always. The star all-rounder has hit 347 runs this year at an average of 57.83, including some crucial runs in this tournament. He has also taken 17 wickets in ten matches, including seven in this World Cup.
- Scott Edwards will be aiming to replicate his ODI form this year (619 runs, avg. 47.61) in the T20Is. A truer pitch may suit his style better, particularly with the sweep shot.
- The impressive Tim Pringle has conceded just five runs per over so far in this tournament. If Netherlands can build pressure early, Pringle can strike as Bangladesh will likely look for the release shots.
- Paul van Meekeren has been excellent, and he will be sure to test Bangladesh with his pace. He touched 148km/h last game against Sri Lanka, where he took 2/25.
Other Stats and Facts
- Head-to-head: Matches 3, Bangladesh 2, Netherlands 1.
- Bangladesh have won just two of their past nine T20Is. Both came against UAE.
- Bangladesh hit just 14 sixes in four matches in the recent T20 Tri-Series.
- Netherlands have won two of their three matches so far in this World Cup.
