After a one-sided first T20I, New Zealand sent a reminder of their depth and capabilities in the second, falling just short of an upset victory against a near full-strength Bangladesh side.

Tom Latham’s excellent 65* went in vain as the Black Caps fell agonisingly short of Bangladesh’s 141 – easily the highest first innings total across the Australia and New Zealand series to date. On another slow surface with signs of uneven bounce, the two captains – Mahmudullah and Latham – led the way with the bat to give this series a different dimension heading into the third match.

Despite the victory, Bangladesh were reminded that they might not have everything their own way. New Zealand will be looking to build on their promising showing in the second T20I, while Bangladesh will be seeking further improvement in their batting ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Bangladesh:

  • Shakib Al Hasan’s 2/29 was crucial after he gave his wicket away with the bat. He has scored double-figures in each of the last seven T20Is in difficult conditions (36, 26, 26, 15, 11, 25, 12), along with 11 wickets.
  • Mahmudullah is coming off a player of the match performance. No player has more T20I runs on this ground than the Bangladesh skipper, with 619 runs in 30 T20Is at an average of 44.21 and strike rate of 125.30. He is yet to be dismissed in this series (14* and 37*).
  • Can Mushfiqur Rahim bounce back after a golden duck in the second T20I? He averages just 19.42 in 28 T20Is on this ground, so he will be seeking an improvement.
  • Mustafizur Rahman will be seeking an improvement, too. His 0/34 in the second match was just his second wicketless outing in his last seven T20Is, and easily his most expensive. He has 91 wickets in 65 T20s on this ground.
  • Nasum Ahmed has taken 11 wickets in his last seven T20Is. His spin partner, Mahedi Hasan, was excellent in the second T20I with 2/12 in his four overs. Mahedi has taken three wickets in two matches so far this series.

New Zealand:

  • It was vital that Tom Latham bats up the order for New Zealand. His 65* off 49 balls gave the tourists a sniff of victory. The skipper will be key again in conditions that aid spin.
  • Rachin Ravindra’s all-round game will be key to New Zealand’s hopes. He is yet to fire with the bat, but his 3/21 with the ball indicates his wicket-taking potential in these conditions.
  • Ajaz Patel is conceding runs at just 3.37 runs per over this series (two wickets). He could be in for a big haul if Bangladesh’s batsmen look to go after him.
  • Cole McConchie also has two wickets to his name this series. He will also be key with the bat down the order, particularly with his ability to rotate strike as he showed in the second T20I (15* off 12 balls).
  • Will Young scored a half-century against Bangladesh earlier this year, and showed some resistance in the second match (22 off 27 balls). Can he find more fluency in this match?

Stats and Facts

  • Bangladesh have the opportunity to win their third-straight T20I series. They have never achieved this before.
  • Mahmudullah is set to become the first Bangladeshi – and eighth player overall – to play 100 T20Is.
  • Mahmudullah is also the most successful Bangladesh T20I skipper, with 12 wins.

Possible Playing 11

Bangladesh are likely to stick with the same XI, unless the look to play left-arm seamer Shoriful Islam.

Bangladesh: 1. Mohammad Naim, 2. Liton Das, 3. Shakib Al Hasan, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim, 5 Mahmudullah (c), 6 Nurul Hasan (wk), 7 Afif Hossain, 8 Mahedi Hasan, 9 Mohammad Saifuddin/Shoriful Islam, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Nasum Ahmed

Finn Allen and Matt Henry are both available for New Zealand, and could play today.

New Zealand: 1. Rachin Ravindra, 2. Tom Blundell/Finn Allen, 3. Tom Latham (c & wk), 4. Colin de Grandhomme, 5. Will Young, 6. Henry Nicholls, 7. Cole McConchie, 8. Doug Bracewell/Scott Kuggeleijn, 9. Ajaz Patel, 10. Hamish Bennett, 11. Ben Sears/Matt Henry

Shere Bangla Stadium Mirpur Dhaka Pitch Report

Bangladesh’s 141 and New Zealand’s 137 were the two highest scores in the last seven T20Is on this ground. The harder pitch offered more for the batsmen, although there was some uneven bounce and turn still available for the bowlers. The team batting first has won seven of the last 10 T20s on this ground.

There is a chance of rain in Mirpur during the match.
