South Africa’s group-stage exit from the on-going ICC T20 World Cup has now invited a review by the Cricket South Africa (CSA). The Proteas went crashing out of the tournament after a defeat against the Netherlands in their final game of the competition.

South Africa’s Director of Cricket (DOC) Enoch Nkwe said, “It is important that we review what has happened. We are in the process of putting a panel together to ensure the review is very clinical.”

“But the focus is hitting the reset button and not dwelling on the past. It’s important that we close a chapter and look at what lies ahead,” the senior CSA official was quoted in a report by ESPNcricinfo.

CSA to review South Africa’s disappointing T20 World Cup exit

Currently, it looks unlikely that the management will take any immediate corrective actions to shake up the unit. White-ball skipper Temba Bavuma, who was under-fire throughout the tournament due to his arguably insipid performances, has said that he will not take any emotional decisions on this issue as of yet.

“The emotions are not as raw, but in terms of the disappointment and the disbelief, that’s still there. It’s going to take me a couple of days,” Bavuma was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.

There have been a lot of chaotic changes in the CSA administration in the last three years. The latest twist has come with head coach Mark Boucher resigning from the job with a year left on his contract in order to take over a similar vacant post in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians.

In the meantime, former South African player Malibongwe Maketa has been appointed as the interim head coach for the team’s upcoming three-match Test series vs Australia.

Nkwe acknowledged that the early exit from the World Cup was disappointing and that they assume full accountability of the situation.

“When the results are poor, there will be fingers pointed at the organisation in terms of what has happened in the past and whether there was enough support. Whether the team loses or wins, we are always going to be supporting the team and asking ourselves questions about what more we can do,” the DOC further explained.
