Wow. Who saw that coming? Even if you felt England were favourites, no one could have expected such a thumping, dominant ten-wicket win with 24 balls to spare in a World Cup semi-final.
Full credit to Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. They produced one of the all-time great white-ball opening partnerships on the big stage, showing up an India side that was conservative and devoid of intent according to Tom Moody. Rightly, many other pundits and fans echo his thoughts after Hardik Pandya got India to a par score of 168 despite hitting a brilliang 33-ball 63.
At the end of the powerplay, India were 31/1. England more than doubled that with 63/0 courtesy of a calculated but ruthless takedown of India’s powerplay bowlers. By the ten over mark, India had only moved 62/2. England at the same stage were 98/0.
Such a pummelling is always going to result in a big post-mortem in a country where cricket is life. The T20I futures of the likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Ravi Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and co. are up in the air. However, it’d be unfair to take too much focus away from the brilliance of Buttler and Hales, who lit up the Adelaide Oval in a way that millions know they can, but very few expected they actually would on such a big stage.
Now, England move on to the MCG to face Pakistan in a repeat of the 1992 ODI World Cup Final in Australia. For India, there is soul searching to do, as well as a huge opportunity for the likes of Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson to perform in next week’s T20I series in New Zealand.
IND vs ENG Twitter reactions: India bow out after Buttler and Hales storm
Here are some of the Twitter reactions to England’s magnificent win, where Buttler and Hales produced the highest partnership ever in men’s T20 World Cups in a clinical display. Also, a special mention to Adil Rashid, who bowled a terrific spell of 1/20.
