CSK’s number three took the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) attack apart on their own patch, smashing six fours and five sixes in 29 balls en route to an unbeaten 71. He and Shivam Dube (50 off 21 balls) combined for 85 in 5.3 overs to blow KKR away, with Chennai finishing on 235/4 and eventually winning by a mammoth 49 runs.
Before this season, Rahane’s 4,074 IPL runs came at a strike rate of 120.70. This year, he has hammered 209 runs at a strike rate of 199.04. To achieve such a change at 34 is quite unbelievable, and CSK look all the more dangerous because of it. MS Dhoni’s team has shot up to the top of the league after their seven matches, with a healthy net run rate of 0.662 to boot.

Fans were full of praise for Rahane and CSK. “Having the freedom to go out there & given a free licence to express yourself irrespective of what happens has been the mantra of this CSK side under MS Dhoni & Stephen Fleming. It was Moeen Ali in the last two seasons & this year it’s Rahane,” one tweet read. “Never ever write off such champion cricketers. Because all they know is how to make a grand comeback and silence their critics with such sublime batting,” read another.
Ian Bishop put it perfectly. “This is a really impressive transformation in T20 batting by Ajinkya Rahane. I didn’t know he had all this in his “bag”. A great lesson that transformation can take place even at a later stage once the mind is willing and the attitude follows,” he tweeted.
