Cricket News: List of fastest 50s in IPL history | The top five fastest 50s in IPL history: Who has scored the fastest fifty in the IPL?

Over the years, the record for the fastest half-century has been shattered numerous times in the Indian Premier League (IPL). At times, it has been done by openers looking for a quick start to their innings. On other occasions, it is by middle-order power hitters making a mockery of run chases.

Fastest 50s in the IPL

Nevertheless, these innings have delighted the spectators en masse. CricBlog takes a relook at six of the fastest 50s smashed in the history of the IPL.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (13 deliveries)

The night of 11 May 2023 was a historic one. Young gun Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed the fastest fifty ever in the IPL, taking just 13 balls to bring up the milestone against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.

The talented left-hander took advantage of Nitish Rana’s decision to bowl himself in the first over, plus Rana’s unnecessary overthrow in the following over. In the end, Jaiswal finished with 98* as the Royals chased KKR’s 149 with a massive nine wickets and 41 balls to spare.

KL Rahul (14 deliveries)

KL Rahul was a marquee acquisition by Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2018. He set the ball rolling right from the offset by hitting the fastest ever half-century in the league against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali.

Chasing 166, Rahul got off to a flier as he hit six boundaries and four sixes to get to 51 in 14 deliveries before being dismissed by Trent Boult in the fifth over. At a strike rate of 318.75, Rahul had already steered his team to a touching distance of victory and the home team secured the two points by finishing off the chase in the 19th over.

Pat Cummins (14 deliveries)

Australian pacer Pat Cummins equalled Rahul’s record whilst representing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Pune in April 2022.

KKR were chasing 162 and were in trouble at 101/5 in the 14th over. In walked Pat Cummins with a clear intent to finish off the game as quickly as possible and reached his half-century in just 14 deliveries. In the process, he helped KKR win the game at the end of the 16th over itself. Cummins got the Player of the Match award of his incredible batting effort (56* off 15 balls) coupled with the two wickets he took with the ball.

Yusuf Pathan (15 deliveries)

Yusuf Pathan used to be one of the certified original superstars of the IPL. One of his most iconic knocks came against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) away from home in 2014. KKR were chasing 162 and were in a tricky spot at 55-2 in the eighth over when Pathan arrived to the crease.

What followed was absolute carnage as Pathan reached his fifty in 15 balls. The all-rounder from Baroda struck seven sixes in addition to five boundaries to get to 72 in merely 22 deliveries and enable KKR to win the game in the 15th over.

Sunil Narine (15 deliveries)

This was about the same time that Sunil Narine’s big-hitting promise was getting noticed across the world. KKR had promoted Narine to open along with Chris Lynn and the southpaw hit the homerun straightaway by notching a half-century in merely 15 deliveries against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in 2017.

KKR were chasing only 159 but the initial onslaught ensured that they reached the target within 16 overs. Narine smashed six boundaries and four sixes as he maximised the scoring opportunities at RCB’s home ground.

Nicholas Pooran (15 deliveries)

Nicholas Pooran pulled off one of the greatest chasing heists in the IPL as he hit 62 runs in 19 deliveries to lead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to victory against the RCB in Bengaluru in IPL 2023.

Faf du Plessis’ men had given them a target of 213 and LSG looked pretty much out of the contest at 105/5 in the 11th over. However, Pooran had other plans as he sent seven balls over the boundary line in addition to four fours to first get to his half-century in 15 deliveries. Acquired for Rs 16 crore in the auction, the Caribbean superstar gave a good reminder of his capabilities with this herculean effort.
