After rain washed out the first New Zealand-India T20I in Wellington, rain is also forecast in Mount Maunganui for Sunday’s second match. As a result, both team’s desire to bounce back from their respective T20 World Cup semi-final defeats might be delayed a little longer.
According to AccuWeather, heavy afternoon showers are forecast, with an 89% chance of precipitation. Metservice also predicts some heavy showers, with some breaks throughout the day.
Mount Maunganui weather forecast: Shortened match likely for NZ vs IND match
The second T20I is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm local time. A full match is unlikely given rain is forecast to fall between 8-10pm. AccuWeather’s hourly forecast notes a 64% chance of precipitation in this period, with at least 2mm to fall. Metservice’s forecast suggests 2.4mm will fall between 8-9pm and 2.7mm between 9-10pm.
Also, there is the concern around whether the outfield will be ready for the start of the match. Showers, possibly heavy, are forecast in the late morning and early afternoon, which may delay the toss before more rain is forecast to fall at 8pm.
So, if there is a result, it will more than likely occur in a shortened match. Otherwise, the series will move to Napier on Tuesday locked at 0-0 after two washouts.
