Sitting at 43/4 against South Africa a week ago two games after a shock loss to Zimbabwe, Pakistan’s T20 World Cup hopes looked gone. Thanks to an onslaught led by Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed, Pakistan went on to beat South Africa, but still needed a surprise result to go in their favour. The Netherlands delivered.
But, in terms of what they could control, Pakistan have been terrific. Their semi-final win against New Zealand was as clinical as it was thrilling, sending the strong Pakistani crowd into raptures as they booked a ticket into this Sunday’s big finale.
On paper, Pakistan is a dangerous team. However, it’s a whole other story when momentum is on their side. Belief is peaking, and when that is the case, they are mighty difficult to stop.
New Zealand found that out the hard way. They huffed and puffed their way to 152, a total that looked at least 10-15 short. Then, when star duo Tim Southee and Trent Boult found little joy in the opening overs against magnificent Babar-Rizwan opening combination, Kane Williamson’s side were always left to fight with their heads just above water. In the end, they had no energy left.
It is yet another near miss for New Zealand in white-ball tournaments. So often do they reach the business end, but their wait for a ICC limited overs trophy since 2000 continues. Indeed, it was an extremely disappointing performance when it mattered most.
