“That’s why they call him the new Mr. 360 degrees,” said Sunil Gavaskar on commentary.
Suryakumar Yadav dazzled once again in a dream year for the India batsman. With his 25-ball 61* against Zimbabwe, Suryakumar, affectionately known as “SKY”, became the first Indian to cross 1,000 T20I runs in a calendar year.

It’s not just the runs, but the manner in which they have come. His most recent knock against New Zealand was filled with extraordinary strokeplay, which has been a feature of Yadav’s game right throughout the year. Here are some of his wonderful numbers this year.
His 1,151 runs have come at a ridiculous strike rate of 188.37. In 30 innings this year, he has struck 11 50+ scores, including two hundreds.
However, it is in the middle and death overs where India gain a significant advantage courtesy of Suryakumar. Between overs seven and 15, Yadav has smashed his runs at a strike rate of 179.1. In the final four overs, the strike rate soars to 263.3.
Ashwin says Suryakumar is a huge asset for India
Spinner R Ashwin said that it’s up to the others to do their bit to complement Suryakumar given the range of strokeplay he possesses.
“Sweep shots. You don’t expect somebody to play lap sweep and square sweep to fast bowlers. But Surya plays these. We know that. That is one of the reasons he complements other batters really well,” Ashwin said.
“If you see, those who counter spin well are the ones who play the sweep and the reverse sweep. So you just can’t be hitting the ball down the ground and expect to hit sixes. If Surya’s batting merges with people who can hit down the ground, it is a wonderful combination.”
Coach Rahul Dravid also praised India’s number four, speaking of his hard work.
“One of the things about Surya is just the amount of hard work that he’s put in in the nets, in thinking about his game, his fitness. If I look at Surya from a couple of years ago, just to see how he takes care of his body and the amount of time he spends on his fitness, I think he’s just really earning the reward for a lot of the hard work that he’s put in on and off the field, and long may it continue.”
