Cricket News: Tamim Iqbal disagrees with Litton Das calling Ish Sodhi back | Tamim says Bangladesh should not have called Sodhi back

New Zealand beat Bangladesh easily by 86 runs in the second ODI at Mirpur. Ish Sodhi was the topic of the day in more ways than one, ripping through the Tigers lineup, taking 6/39 after scoring 35 off 39 balls with the bat.

However, the big story was Litton Das and Hasan Mahmud deciding to call Sodhi back after the seamer ran him out at the non-strikers end. Sodhi was on 17 at that stage, going on to help New Zealand post 250+ on a slow pitch at the Shere-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The move divided fans online, and so too senior batsman Tamim Iqbal. Speaking to the media following Bangladesh’s disappointing loss, Tamim said that Hasan Mahmud did nothing wrong and that the dismissal is within the rules of the game.

Tamim Iqbal says Litton Das should not have recalled Sodhi

“I don’t see anything wrong in it. The rule is there,” said Tamim. “If we get someone out, or one of us gets out in that manner, I don’t think we should react the way people are reacting nowadays.”

Tamim acknowledged that it was a team decision, but there was to be a discussion in the dressing room following the match as to whether Bangladesh will even attempt running the non-striker out in the future.

“I think it is a team decision,” Tamim continued. “We will definitely talk about it after today’s incident. If it is a team decision that we will take wickets in this way, we will.

“If we don’t want to take it, we will not try it. I don’t think it looks good to bring back a batter after getting him out. Either we take it, or we don’t do it.”

Fans had their say on social media. Those in favour of Litton’s decision praised him for displaying sportsmanship and playing within the spirit of the game. Others believe that Bangladesh legitimately dismissed Sodhi, and thus should have not decided to recall him.

The two teams will meet in the third and final ODI on Tuesday, 26 September at Mirpur before departing for India for the World Cup.
