Cricket News: Teams can name XIs after toss in IPL 2023 | IPL 2023 rule change: teams can name playing XIs after toss
Following on from SA20 2023, captains in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) can confirm their playing XI after the coin toss. In the IPL, skippers will walk out with two teamsheets, with scope to choose their preferred team depending on whether they bat or bowl first.
An internal note from the IPL, seen by ESPNcricinfo, said “Currently the captains have to exchange the teams before the toss. This has been changed to exchange of teams immediately post the toss, to enable teams to choose the best XI depending on whether they are batting or bowling first. It will also assist the teams to plan for the impact player.”
IPL follows suit after SA20 2023 allowed teams to confirm XIs after the toss
In the SA20, captains walked out to the toss with a list of 13 players. Teams then confirmed their XIs based on what they were doing first.
Graeme Smith, SA20 League commissioner, said the change was brought in to limit the impact of the toss. The IPL has since followed suit.
“One of the major reasons we did it was to try and lessen the impact of the toss on the outcome of the game, and create an opportunity for deliberation depending on whether teams are batting or bowling,” said Smith back in January.
Other tweaks to playing conditions for IPL 2023
- For every over not completed in the allocated time, teams will face a penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle.
- Unfair movement of the wicketkeeper or a fielder will result in a dead ball and five penalty runs.
