2022 was a big year for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The broadcasting rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) sold for a whopping US$6.2 billion over the 2023-2027 cycle.
So, how does the IPL compare to some of the other major sporting leagues around the globe? Let’s have a look.

5. National Basketball Association (NBA): US$2.11 million per match
According to TVREV, the NBA’s annual media rights amount to approximately US$2.6 billion. With a whopping 1,230 games in a season, this equates to about US$2.11 million per match.
The NBA is reportedly seeking anywhere between $50-75 billion for its next TV deal over an eight to ten year period from 2025.
4. Major League Baseball (MLB): US$10.93 million per match
MLB signed a new broadcast deal for the 2022-28 cycle totalling US$12.24 billion with partners ESPN, FOX and TBS. With a total of 1,134 games over seven seasons, the broadcast value per match stands at approximately US$10.93 million.
3. English Premier League (EPL): US$11.23 million per match
The EPL is one of the most popular football leagues on the planet. The league generates approximately US$5.3 billion in revenue annually. Also, between 2022 and 2025, the broadcast value per match is US$11.23 million, which is the third-highest in the world.
2. Indian Premier League (IPL): US$15.1 million per match
The IPL is second for highest broadcast value per match. Formed in 2008, the league has experienced exponential growth in 15 years, with the first broadcast deal worth a total of $US1.1 billion over ten years. This then more-than-doubled to US$2.55 in 2018 and then again in 2022 (US$6.1 billion).
The 2023-27 cycle will have a total of 370 matches (74 per season), with a whopping US$15.11 million per match in broadcasting fees.

1. National Football League (NFL): US$17 million per match
The NFL is the world’s most valuable sporting league. The Super Bowl is an event keenly watched right around the globe, which takes place between the winners of the American Football Conference and National Football Conference.
According to Forbes, each NFL match is worth approximately US$17 based on the 10-year rights deal signed in 2022.
