Cricket News: Will Ben Stokes participate in the IPL 2023 Auction? | Will Ben Stokes play in IPL 2023?

English Test skipper Ben Stokes is showing interest in participating in the auction for the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) that will be held on 16th December. Stokes’ keenness to take part in the competition is irrespective of the fact that the Ashes follow the IPL in the summer of 2023.

The showpiece Australia-England series will commence from 16th June onwards and there will be additional pressure on Stokes to reclaim the urn after their disappointing showing Down Under last year. Both Stokes and an official from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) didn’t respond to messages sent by Cricbuzz on this issue.

Stokes’ availability could certainly stir up the exercise which was supposed to be a small affair considering the mega-auction took place just prior to the previous season. In addition to Stokes, in-form all-rounders like Sam Curran and Cameron Green are also expected to put their name in the auction pool.

Curran has previously turned up for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2020 and 2021. However, he had to miss the last campaign due to an injury. Green made heads turn with his stupendous outings when Australia toured India for a T20I series in September. He is likely to attract interest from numerous franchises as well.

Prices for certain players tend to inflate during mini-auctions considering that teams have a significant purse but the availability of cricketers is less as most of them are contracted with some or the other franchise. For example, the likes of Krishnappa Gowtham and Jhye Richardson raked in Rs 9.25 crore and Rs 14 crore from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) respective in the IPL 2021 auction.

In that backdrop, franchises are already working proactively to bolster their pockets by releasing certain players ahead of the auction. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has set the deadline as 15th November for the franchises to inform them about the players they plan to leave out for next season.

Cricbuzz has reported that PBKS are all set to make some sweeping changes in their roster under the tutelage of new coach Trevor Bayliss. They already appointed Shikhar Dhawan as the skipper in place of Mayank Agarwal. Now, news doing the rounds suggests that they might release Agarwal (Rs 12 crore), Shahrukh Khan (Rs 9 crore) and Odean Smith (Rs 6 crore).

Bayliss is keen on acquiring at least two amongst Stokes, Green and Curran in the auction and is willing to make space for them by letting certain key, high-profile players leave the squad. Each team will be getting an increment of Rs 5 crore on top of their existing salary purse this year. Meanwhile, the BCCI is still deciding on the venue for auction.

They were initially considering Istanbul for the same but logistical and operational concerns mean that this plan is on hold for now. A final decision on this front is expected to be taken in the coming week.
