Cricket News: Will Jasprit Bumrah play in the Test series against Australia? | Jasprit Bumrah injury update for Australia series
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has warned against fast-tracking Jasprit Bumrah’s return to the national side. However, he hopes that the Mumbai Indians (MI) bowler will be available for the last two Tests of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Bumrah was first included then sidelined from the squad for the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka. The 29-year-old has recovered from the back injury that kept him out for months but then suffered a setback on his glute in January that compelled him to pull out of that assignment as well.
Hoping Bumrah will play last two Tests against Australia – Rohit Sharma
The last two matches of the series against Australia will be held in Dharamshala and Ahmedabad from 1-5 March and 9-13 March respectively.
“I’m expecting that (Bumrah to feature in first two Tests); not expecting but hoping he plays the next two Test matches but again we don’t want to take any risk with him,” Rohit was quoted in a report by ESPN Cricinfo.
He added, “The back injuries are always critical. We have got lot of cricket coming up after that as well, we will see, and we will monitor. We are in constant touch with doctors and physios at NCA and we are constantly hearing from them.”
Bumrah was suggested to have rehabilitation for six weeks at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to recover from the stress fracture in his back. He restarted his training on November 25 and began bowling again from December 16 onwards. However, the glute injury has put in doubts his possible participation in the Australia series as well.
The recent injuries have forced Bumrah to miss out on multiple important assignments – such as the Asia Cup, T20 World Cup and then the Test series in Bangladesh. He last played a Test in Edgbaston in July last year when he led India in the fifth game vs England.
