Cricket News: World Test Championship WTC 2021-2023 scenarios | World Test Championship scenarios for AUS, IND, SL, SA
The current cycle (2021-23) of the World Test Championship (WTC) is entering a busy period with the limited-overs frenzy of the last six months settling down gradually. Several teams have their red-ball assignments lined up in the next four months with the final of this edition set to be played at The Oval in London in June 2023.
As of now, Australia, India, Sri Lanka and South Africa occupy the first four spots in the WTC standings. Only the top two teams will progress to the final and hence the battle for the same is likely to intensify soon. In this article, CricBlog takes a detailed look at the qualification scenarios for the top four sides placed in the WTC rankings.
WTC 2021-2023 scenarios
1. Australia
- Points: 123
- Percentage: 66.67
- Remaining Tests: 2 vs India (away)
Australia has done well by accumulating 136 points with a 66.67 per cent winning rate in WTC 2021-23. But, now they are in some strife as they are 2-0 down in India.
The only way Australia will miss out on the WTC Final is if they lose 4-0 and Sri Lanka win both Tests in New Zealand. In such an instance, Australia’s win percentage will drop to 59.65, with the Lions going above them with 61.11.
India
- Points: 99
- Percentage: 64.03
- Remaining Tests: 2 vs Australia (home)
The tight win in the second Test over Bangladesh was crucial. Should India win all two remaining Tests against Australia, they will finish with a win percentage of 68.05.
The maximum Sri Lanka can get is 58.33. The corresponding figure for South Africa is 55.56. So, India can put these results out of the equation and seal their qualification with at least 3-1 win over Australia.
Sri Lanka
- Points: 64
- Percentage: 53.33
- Remaining Tests: New Zealand (away)
Sri Lanka are positioned in third spot currently but they have a tough task ahead of them with a two-match Test series in New Zealand.
To qualify, Sri Lanka must win 2-0 to finish on a win percentage of 58.33. Also, they will need Australia to lose 4-0 in India.
