If Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) thought facing spin was tricky earlier in IPL 2023, a whole other challenge is likely to be coming their way at Chepauk. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are aiming to consolidate their place in the top four, and have the perfect chance to do so at home against an SRH side that has had their issues when playing spin.

However, the IPL almost always throws up curveballs. If CSK believe they can win just by turning up, they may have another thing coming with SRH having a number of excellent players in their ranks. With MS Dhoni as the leader, though, expect CSK to be switched on and ready to go after their great win against RCB under pressure.

For SRH, it’s go time. They can either join the other five teams on six points on be stuck with KKR on four. There was plenty of optimism about their chances before the start of the season, so whether they can translate that into positive results is the challenge.

Matheesha Pathirana was excellent at the death against RCB, so much so that “Baby Malinga” received praise from the great Lasith Malinga. However, CSK may wish to go with another spin option in Mitchell Santner.

Chennai Super Kings:

• Devon Conway hammered 83 last game against RCB and 85 against SRH in IPL 2022.
• Ruturaj Gaikwad has struck 235 runs at an average of 58.75 and strike rate of 154.61 against SRH. He has scored 33 runs off 13 balls against Umran Malik (no dismissal) and 21 off 22 balls against Bhuvneshwar Kumar (no dismissal).
• Ajinkya Rahane is in superb touch. He is striking at 195.45 this season.
• Ravindra Jadeja has a terrible record against SRH (18 inns, 5 wickets, avg. 76.00, econ. 7.81), but he will be key against their long list of right-handers. The spinner was excellent in the last game at Chepauk, where he took 2/21 against RR and spun the ball sharply.
• Maheesh Theekshana has been expensive so far in IPL 2023, but expect him to test SRH. Harry Brook has been dismissed twice by spin so far this season at a strike rate of just 100.

• Rahul Tripathi strikes at 156.41 in four matches at Chepauk (122 runs, avg. 30.50). In ten matches overall against CSK, he strikes at 149.68 with 232 runs to his name (avg. 29.00).
• Aiden Markram is crucial to SRH’s hopes. In 19 T20s this year, the SRH captain has made 562 runs at an average of 37.47 and strike rate of 140.
• Abhishek Sharma has a vital role to play against CSK’s spinners. Since the start of 2022, Abhishek has scored 187 runs at an average of 26.7 and strike rate of 162.6 against spin.
• Washington Sundar needs to step up for SRH. This is the game he can. In T20s since the start of 2022, Devon Conway has been dismissed four times in 103 balls against offspin at a strike rate of just 115.53.
• Mayank Markande in IPL 2023: 3 inns, 6 wickets, avg. 12.83, econ. 6.41. Also, he has taken three wickets in as many games against CSK.
