The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin with a blockbuster KKR-RCB clash, but the Kolkata weather may have other ideas. The forecast is for thunderstorms and heavy rain in the evening, putting the tournament opener under threat.
According to reports, the meteorological department has issued an Orange alert for rain and thunderstorms between today (March 20) and Saturday March 22, which is when the KKR-RCB match is scheduled to take place. An Orange warning is given when increased probability of extreme weather can lead to issues such as disruptions or damage to property.
Eden Gardens Kolkata weather forecast: KKR-RCB match under significant threat
According to AccuWeather, up to 34mm of rainfall is expected at night at Eden Gardens with a 90% chance of precipitation. The hourly forecast predicts the thunderstorms to eventuate at 9pm until around midnight local time. Should this eventuate, the match will be washed out after an innings of play.

Google predicts a similar forecast with the significant rainfall to come at night. Hot and humid conditions are expected throughout the day, with thunderstorms to build up in the evening.

There is little doubt that the captain who wins the toss will choose to bowl. The Duckworth/Lewis Method is almost certain to come into the equation if there is to be a result. Plus, the warm and overcast conditions will bring swing into play with the new ball.
There have been no washouts in KKR-RCB matches. The two teams have met 35 times, with KKR emerging victorious on 21 occasions, including the past four clashes.
