Will Gujarat Titans (GT) make it three from three or will it be Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who build on their superb win over RCB? That is the question.

GT, as put perfectly by Tom Moody, have continued on brilliantly from their IPL 2022 campaign. Their bowlers have been as efficient as ever, while their calmness when chasing is a sight to behold. This being a day game limits the chasing advantage somewhat, so it will be interesting to see how the Titans perform in such conditions.

For KKR, the focus will be on the top order. It has wilted against both Punjab and Bangalore so far, with the lower order, particularly against RCB, firing in stunning fashion. Now, they play arguably the best attack out of the three, so a big test awaits in providing enough runs to complement a very decent attack.

Gujarat Titans are settled. Depending on whether they bat or bowl first, they can substitute Vijay Shankar (or a similar player) for a bowler.

Kolkata Knight Riders are coming off an excellent win against RCB. More will be expected of their top order, however, who were bailed out by the magnificent Shardul Thakur.

Jason Roy, who was picked up by KKR for 2.8cr, could play. But for whom? Tim Southee could make way for a domestic seamer or Suyash Sharma.

Expect Venkatesh Iyer to be either the player who starts (batting first) or is substituted in (bowling first).

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Gujarat Titans:

• Shubman Gill loves batting on this ground. He has hit a T20I century, Test century and 63 (33) in the IPL so far in 2023.
• In five T20s at Ahmedabad, Gill has scored 286 runs at an average of 95.33 and strike rate of 152.13.
• Sai Sudharsan announced himself to IPL 2023 with a solid 62* (48) in the last match against Delhi. How he counters KKR’s off-spinners will be key.
• David Miller when chasing since the start of 2022 (franchise T20s): 28 inns, 629 runs, avg. 48.40, SR 138.2.
• Hardik Pandya has an outstanding record against KKR. In 11 innings, the GT captain has scored 366 runs at an average of 61.00 and strike rate of 173.46. This includes 67 (49) last season.
• Hardik has scored 56 off 37 against Narine (no dismissal), 21 off 19 against Chakravarthy (no dismissal), 29 off 18 against Russell (one dismissal), 35 off 20 against Umesh (no dismissal).
• Rashid Khan is in wicket-taking form. He has five in three matches in IPL 2023. GT have used Rashid later in the innings, and expect them to do so again given he has had the better of Andre Russell in franchise T20s: 30 balls, 33 runs, three dismissals.
• Mohammed Shami will be key against KKR’s shaky top order. He has 12 wickets in as many matches against the franchise, striking every 23 balls.

Kolkata Knight Riders:

• Andre Russell has dominated Mohammed Shami in the IPL. He has smashed 88 off 35 balls against him, dismissed once.
• Russell scored 48 (25) against GT last season, and threatened to take the game away. He also took 4/5, taking cheap wickets in the final over.
• Jason Roy hit 245 runs in the recent PSL at an average of 40.83 and strike rate of 166.67. He has hit 45 off 34 against Rashid Khan in all T20s (one dismissal).
• Hardik Pandya has a good record against all KKR bowlers except Tim Southee. The Kiwi has dismissed Pandya thrice in 30 balls in T20s, whilst conceding just 38.
• Shardul Thakur is coming off one of the great performances. His 68 (29) turned the game against RCB. He also took 1/15.
• Varun Chakravarthy also had a blinder vs RCB. He has started IPL 2023 very well with 4/15 and 1/26.

• Wriddhiman Saha has scored 105 off 68 balls against Umesh Yadav, with two dismissals.

It was a true batting surface on the opening night of IPL 2023, where Gujarat chased Channei’s 178 with four balls to spare. Earlier this year, India smashed 234 against New Zealand, where Shubman Gill hit a brilliant ton. Expect another good batting pitch early in the tournament.
