You can earn money from blogging online!

It is what makes it a very attractive proposition for millions of people around the world. I mean, who wouldn’t be excited at the thought of starting a website, writing a couple of articles and watching the money roll in?

In reality, this is not the case. The one thing I can tell you for certain is that blogging is not a ‘get-rich-quick’ scheme! If it was, everyone would be doing it. Many drop out because they don’t see the dollars come in right away, proving that they were in the blogging game for the wrong reason.

Key tip: Passion for cricket and producing content regularly must be first. Earning money is a result of why you do what you do.

This article will take you through five key ways I am making money with CricBlog and how you can do the same with yours.

1. Sell your own advertising space

This is a viable way of making money with your blog. When you begin generating at lead hundreds of views a day (especially from Google Search), you can launch your own media kit.

You can check out my media kit as an example.

What can be included?

  • Advertising spots
  • Sponsored articles and content
  • Commission articles

Content ideas and earning money go hand-in-hand.

2. Sponsored Content

If your site has great content, partners will approach you looking to work with you.

Over the past few months, I have had media buyers approach me via email to place an article on my site. This is cricket-related, with a link to a client’s site to help boost that company’s SEO.

Key tip: Build good relationships with media buyers by delivering good results. This can turn into a good income stream.

Also, this started to happen for me after I moved from a free blog to a self-hosted one. Find out more here about which platforms I think are best.

3. Freelance Writing

You can also write for other sites and earn money.

“Freelance writing” means writing for several websites or publications, while being self-employed. Here, you need to build a strong portfolio of content to prove you are capable of producing good stuff!

Key tip: There are some great freelance writing platforms out there. Fiverr is one where you can get easily approved and promote what you do as others look for people just like you for work.

4. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is where you promote someone else’s product and earn a commission. It often involves you having a trackable link from a ‘vendor’, so when a consumer makes a purchase via that link, you get a piece of the pie.

This could be anywhere between 5-50%.

Below is a snapshot of how it works. You, the blogger, are the ‘publisher’. The company, product or service you are promoting is the ‘vendor’.

However, affiliate marketing is more than just randomly placing a banner ad or link in a random article hoping someone clicks on it and makes a purchase. You need to be strategic about, employing some key tactics to make it work for you.

5. Google AdSense

Google AdSense is one of the most common ways bloggers look to make money online.

AdSense is a platform where advertisers place their advertisements on the Google Advertising Network. Their advertisements then get placed on relevant websites, based on how much they bid for a certain keyword.

This then leads closely to how you can make money from Google AdSense.

How to make money from AdSense

Whenever someone clicks an ad on your blog, you receive a payment. This is after you get your account approved (consistent, valuable content is key).

However, there is a key trick to keep in mind when making money with AdSense: keywords.

Advertisers place bids for certain keywords. If you rank for keywords on your blog, those ads will be placed on your site and you will receive 68% of what the advertiser bid for that keyword.

The above example from TheHoth shows what the cost per click (CPC) is for the top keywords relating to ‘cricket bats’. You can use this great tool to see what delivers the highest CPC. If you rank for any of these keywords, Google ensures a relevant ad is placed on your site. A click on the ad gives you a higher CPC than a random ad placed on an article that doesn’t rank on Google.
