For new cricket bloggers looking to set up a self-hosted blog, it is important to set up a strong foundation for success (find out more about free vs self hosted blogs).

Cricket blogging, when done with commitment and purpose, can be very rewarding! WordPress, the world’s leading Content Management System, makes this reality for both myself and bloggers around the world. If you fall into any of these categories, WordPress might just be the answer for you:

  • You don’t have a background in web design.
  • Your HTML knowledge is very limited.
  • You don’t have the time, knowledge or commitment to code your site from scratch.

This was the case with me. I needed something easy that could enable me to live out my passion for cricket, without having to spend time figuring out things on a website.

I haven’t looked back with WordPress. It was so easy to set up, with the following benefits giving me full control over my blogging experience:

  • Creating own theme and look.
  • Great plugins to boost blogging performance. This includes Yoast SEO for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  • Drag and drop items to set up your website the way you want to.

How to set up your blog with Bluehost and WordPress

Creating a WordPress account is free. However, the investment comes with your domain name and hosting. This article will show you is how to get your own domain name, as well as how to host your site with Bluehost.

Bluehost is an official WordPress recommended web hosting provider. They have been a partner of WordPress since 2005 (I was in year 7 of school!), priding themselves on handling a lot of traffic across the world.

They can because they host millions of websites. Including mine!

Personally, my web hosting decision was after quite a bit of research. I had to choose the investment that would deliver the best value for money. In the end, I chose Bluehost for a few key reasons:

  • Reliable: Their up-time of 99.99% is the best out there. This means the host has only 1 hour of downtime in a whole year.
  • Fast load time: If your site is too slow, visitors will leave. Bluehost’s load time is just 406 milliseconds.
  • Good price: You can host a site for AU$3-10 a month. Often, Bluehost have promotions where you can spend even less.
  • Recommended by WordPress.

How to select your plan and domain name

Once you click “Get Started” on the Bluehost site, you select the plan you want. The below images are what you’ll see.

Once you choose the plan you want, you can then choose the domain name. The domain name refers to what people type in to get to your site. For example, “www.cricblog.net”. A few tips to keep in mind:

  • Make sure it is easy to remember
  • It has to be unique i.e. no one else can have it. For example, if “www.cricblog.net” was already taken, I couldn’t choose it.
  • The shorter the better.

Once you have your domain name selected, you will need to select your plan. You can choose 12, 24 or 36 months. On the plans page, there are a number of additional purchases you could make, but you can keep those for later if you choose. An example image is below.

Install WordPress

Once you have completed your Bluehost setup, you will receive an email on how to login to your web hosting panel (cPanel). This is where you can install WordPress.

In your panel, you will see lots of icons and services. Ignore them. All you need to focus on the following:

  • Scroll down to the website section and select WordPress.
  • You will be directed to the Bluehost Marketplace Quick Install section. Select “Get Started”.
  • Enter the domain name you selected when you signed up for Bluehost.
  • Add your site name (i.e. ‘CricBlog’), create your username and password.
  • Click install and you’re set!

From there, you can then choose your theme and look for your site.
