Five key things to consider before starting a Cricket Blog

Starting a cricket blog can be one of the most rewarding decisions you make. From showcasing your passion for cricket to increasing your profile to even making some money, a blogging journey is a great experience.

As avid cricket followers (and players in cases), we understand the importance of strong, positive mindset for success on the pitch. Whether you are batting, bowling or fielding, a positive mindset is the building block for achieving something special.

The same applies to blogging. It requires patience, belief, consistency and dedication. I believe there are some key points to learn and keep in mind:

  1. What is your vision? This is arguably the most important question. What does a successful blog look like to you? What does your life look like?
  2. Your blog isn’t going to drive huge traffic right away. You need to build your blog through good, hard work.
  3. What should you write about? Focus on delivering value for your target audience.
  4. How often do you need to write? This doesn’t have to be every day. Be disciplined and look to build a consistent stream of social and organic traffic. Find out how today!
  5. And the final tip… if you’re looking for quick money, this isn’t for you. Blogging requires plenty of passion and commitment. Earning money is a result of hard work – not the reason why you do it. For me, blogging is the opportunity to express my love for the game after being forced to stop playing due to injuries. What’s your reason?

The importance of strategy!

You need to have a strategy.

I can’t stress the importance of this enough!

How will you drive to your blog? What tone will you write in? How will build a strong and loyal following?

Free vs. self-hosted blog

Another point to consider when looking to start a blog is whether to start with a free or self-hosted blog.

What is a free site?

A free blog is exactly that. You can start a blog with no initial investment. For example, you can start a free blog with ‘Blogger’ as part of your Google Account.

In a free site, .blogspot or .wordpress (if you use WordPress) will appear at the end of your domain. For example, cricblog.blogspot.com. The content is stored on the Google or WordPress server (if you use either of these two).

Pros:

  • No up-front investment.
  • Very easy to use.
  • Can look to build good blogging habits with less pressure.

Cons:

  • Almost impossible to generate long-term, consistent Google Search traffic.
  • Free blogs don’t look as professional.
  • Limited bandwidth, video and memory space.
  • Less control over your blog: limited customisation options.

What is paid hosting?

Paid hosting is one that resides on your own server. You have your own domain name (i.e. https://cricblog.net), where you would typically have an initial investment plus pay a small monthly fee (in some cases). For example, Bluehost (my choice – see why) requires the total investment up front. The positive, though, is that you won’t have to worry about payments for the length of your plan. It is set and forget!

Also, I chose WordPress after spending some time building my blogging presence with a free blog. Even if you aren’t a web professional, WordPress gives you control of your site with ease.

Pros:

  • You’re in control with a self-hosted blog: Customise your blog the way you want to.
  • It is a lot easier to get found. Find out how today!
  • You don’t have to be a web professional to produce a nice looking site.

Cons:

  • It can be a little daunting to make an investment in your early days.

However, the benefits outweigh the costs. I have been able to make some money in the seven months since launch my self-hosted blog, and you can too with some key tactics.
