For just the second time in two years, India are set to host an ODI series. It comes at the right time after a 3-0 defeat in a disappointing tour of South Africa, where Team India couldn’t win the key moments.

This series serves as an opportunity to sort out some of India’s key issues in ODI cricket, despite the absence of four players due to COVID-19. Rohit Sharma will take the field in his first match as full-time captain, while Virat Kohli is still chasing that elusive 71st international century. A strong top order display might be too much to handle for a West Indies side that has struggled badly in ODI cricket in recent times, but could be bouyed by a T20I series win against England last week.

Windies lost 2-1 at home to Ireland last month and sit seventh in the ODI Super League table. With teams below them possessing games in hand, it is time Kieron Pollard’s team get a move on, and there is no better way to send a statement than by beating India in the country where next year’s World Cup will be held.

Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Navdeep Saini have tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss this match. Skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed Ishan Kishan will open the batting with him as KL Rahul is out due to family commitments and Mayank Agarwal is yet to complete his isolation period.

Also, eyes will be on who takes that all important number four slot.

• Rohit Sharma is without a doubt one of the top contenders for leading-run scorer in the IND-WI ODI series. He has scored 1,523 ODI runs against Windies at an average of 60.92 and a strike rate of 91.58.
• At home, the numbers are even better. In 16 ODIs against West Indies in India, Rohit has smashed 1,040 runs at an average of 80.00 and strike rate of 100.28. He scored the most runs in West Indies’ visit in 2019 (258).
• Virat Kohli also loves playing the West Indies. He has scored 2,235 runs in 39 matches at an average of 72.09 and strike rate of 97.34. Also, Kohli averages 72.88 in 20 ODIs vs Windies in India.
• Ishan Kishan has the potential to take the game away from the Windies in the powerplay. He is striking above 130 in seven white-ball internationals so far.
• Deepak Chahar, the late-order specialist? He has struck two half-centuries in six ODIs so far, including a brilliant 54 off 34 balls last game vs South Africa. His main role, though, will be to make inroads into the Windies’ top order.
• Kuldeep Yadav is set to return. He has taken 24 wickets in 15 ODIs against West Indies at an average of 24.91 and strike rate of 30.8. He and Yuzvendra Chahal will be aiming to rekindle that excellent partnership they had a few years ago.

West Indies:

• Shai Hope was excellent in the 2019 ODI series in India. He scored 222 runs at an average of 111.00, with a century and half-century. Overall against India, Hope has scored 693 runs at an average of 53.30 (strike rate 73.02).
• Nicholas Pooran has been in good touch in T20Is of late, but can he transfer that form over to the ODIs. He has an excellent record against India, with 293 runs in six innings at an average of 58.60 and strike rate of 116.26.
• West Indies need a big effort from Kieron Pollard. The skipper has scored 448 runs in 18 ODI innings vs India at an average of 28.00 and strike rate of 90.87. Can he improve those numbers today?
• Windies also need a big performance from Jason Holder, who was outstanding in the England T20Is. However, Holder averages 53.33 with the ball in 22 ODIs vs India, and the average balloons up to 72.66 in 14 ODIs in India.
• Holder does have a respectable 385 runs vs India at an average of 27.50 and strike rate of 83.33. Key player.
• Can Kemar Roach make an immediate impact? He has a poor record vs India as well, with 24 wickets in 21 ODI innings at an average of 42.45 and strike rate of 45.
• Akeal Hosein has taken at least one wicket in each of his last 10 internationals, including six wickets in three ODIs vs Ireland and 4/30 in the final T20I vs England. If there is turn on offer, Hosein will take advantage.
