Lucknow Super Giants’ home debut in the IPL has a fascinating feel to it. LSG, so impressive in their first season, will be aiming to go one better this time in what promises to be a competitive league. So, early victories can provide an important confidence boost, which is especially important given that playoff spots are at a premium.

LSG look strong once again. They have a team full of quality players, many of whom can contribute in at least two of the three disciplines. However, how they cope with the absence of Mohsin Khan will be vital, as the left-armer was outstanding in the powerplay in IPL 2022. He often got the franchise off to strong starts, so keep an eye out for who that bowler could be in 2023.

Delhi Capitals also have their questions. Without Rishabh Pant, the Capitals not only need to confirm their keeper, but also ensure they have enough power in the middle order. Their top three of David Warner, Prithvi Shaw and Mitch Marsh is truly superb, but whether there is too much pressure on Rovman Powell in the finishing stakes remains to be seen.

That being said, DC have a handy bowling attack that puts them in contention for a strong season. Anrich Nortje is still to join the franchise after South Africa duty, but in Khaleel Ahmed, Kuldeep Yadav and Chetan Sekariya, the Capitals have a solid domestic base to build off. They face an immediate test today against a strong LSG team.

Quinton de Kock is unavailable for this match as he is on South Africa duty against Netherlands, so LSG may play Kyle Mayers alongside KL Rahul. However, they do have the option of Marcus Stoinis at the top.

Also, LSG will be well served batting Deepak Hooda at three. In all T20s in this position, he has scored 961 runs at an average of 34.32 and strike rate of 148.76. At number five, he has scored 546 runs at an average of just 16.55 and strike rate of 117.67.

Lucknow Super Giants:

• KL Rahul is always towards the top of the run-scorer list in IPLs. He finished third in 2018 (659 runs), second in 2019 (593 runs), first in 2020 (670 runs), third in 2021 (626 runs) and second in 2022 (616 runs).
• Rahul has a middling record against the Capitals. In 12 innings, he has scored 373 runs at an average of 31.08 and strike rate of 141.29.
• It’s a big season for Nicholas Pooran. He is enjoying a promising year so far in T20 franchise cricket, with 390 runs in 12 innings at an average of 43.3 and strike rate of 143.9.
• Since the start of 2021, Marcus Stoinis has scored 316 runs at an average of 39.5 and strike rate of 213.5 between overs 17-20 in franchise cricket.
• Avesh Khan is a middle overs marvel. In all domestic T20s since the start of 2021, Avesh has taken 16 wickets between overs 7-16 at an average of 11.8 and strike rate of 10.9.
• Mark Wood has taken 19 wickets in his last eight T20s. Six of those scalps came at the death, where he conceded just 6.67 per over and struck every six balls.

• Will David Warner rediscover his best form? Since the start of 2021, Warner has scored 726 runs in franchise T20s at an average of 33 and strike rate of 129.9.
• Warner made scores of 4 (12) and 3 (4) against LSG last season. Ravi Bishnoi dismissed him in one of the matches.
• Prithvi Shaw is crucial for DC this season. He struck 61 (34) and 5 (7) against LSG last year.
• Mitchell Marsh is in superb form. In the recent ODI series against India, he belted 194 runs at an average of 97.00.
• Since the start of 2022, Rovman Powell has smashed 366 runs between overs 17 and 20 in T20 franchise cricket. He strikes at 219.2 in this period.
• Khaleel Ahmed has dismissed Prithvi Shaw three times in 30 balls in the IPL (43 runs). Key battle.
• Kuldeep Yadav took the fifth-most wickets in IPL 2022 (21) at an average of 19.95 and strike rate of 14.1. If the Lucknow surface takes turn, Kuldeep will be especially dangerous.
