Ajit Agarkar is set to get a one-year extension as Chairman of the BCCI senior men’s selection committee. This is expected to be confirmed at the Board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday.
According to sources close to the BCCI, CricBlog understands they wish to keep its decision-making stable and consistent without any communication breakdown before the big events in 2027. This is especially as many support staff members had already marked their exit from the team’s management recently.
Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of selectors is set to end this month. However, it is understood that BCCI office bearers wish to extend his term by another year. The decision is expected to bring continuity to the selection committee as India prepares for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh and ODI World Cup in South Africa next year.
BCCI admits the Test decline but backs Ajit Agarkar’s white-ball stint
BCCI office bearers have admitted that India’s Test performances have declined during Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector. But the Indian team winning three major ICC events in this time is being looked upon positively.
“In the wake of the World Cup, the BCCI wants stability in its decision-making until the next big marquee events in 2027, like the Asia Cup and the ICC World Cup in South Africa,” a source close to the BCCI told CricBlog.
“Everyone agrees that the Indian team did not perform well in Tests during Agarkar’s time but at the same time, the team has also won three major ICC events. That’s a testament to some of the timely calls he made during his tenure.”
Agarkar has also maintained a good working relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir during a period of significant change for the Indian team. The two ex-India teammates are believed to have maintained a good and open line of communication while making some difficult decisions.
“They have together orchestrated the overhauling of the Test team this year and some tough decisions like removing Rohit Sharma as ODI captain after the 2025 Champions Trophy and Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain after India’s victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad,” the source added.
The extension of Agarkar, if approved at the AGM, will offer the existing selection setup an additional year to work together before the next big ICC and multinational assignments. Attention will soon turn towards preparing the sides for the Asia Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
