Australia are already planning for the 2027 Border Gavaskar Trophy, with head coach Andrew McDonald confirming that preparations will begin before the team departs for the series.
Australia will tour India for a five-match Test series from January 20 to March 3, 2027. It will be their longest Test tour of India in nearly 50 years. Unlike previous overseas tours, there is no expectation that the team will play a practice match before the first Test.
The fourth and final Test against New Zealand in Sydney is scheduled to finish just 13 days before the start of the BGT. Cricket Australia is considering the idea of a training camp before the series to make up for the absence of a warm up game.
The camp can be held in India or even the UAE so that players can prepare themselves for conditions they are likely to face on the tour.
Some players may start India preparations earlier
Andrew McDonald talked about the possibility of players preparing early for the India tour, especially those who aren’t part of the Australia-New Zealand series.
Some players might also skip part of the Big Bash League (BBL) so they can spend more time working on their game before the important Test series. The idea is to give them enough time to acclimatise to the conditions players usually face in India.
Speaking to cricket.com.au, McDonald said, “We feel as though we’ve got enough time to immerse ourselves in those conditions. We won’t be taking on a practice game. It’ll just be more around the location.
“We’ve got a couple of options there. We have gone to the UAE previously and we have also gone into India last time into Bangalore, so we’re just working through what that would look like in terms of how we then manage the individuals.”
A number of players will likely be in the hunt for places in Australia’s squad for the Test series in India in 2027. Some names mentioned at this stage include Matthew Kuhnemann, Todd Murphy, Cooper Connolly, Peter Handscomb and Matthew Renshaw.
There is still plenty of time before the squad is finalised. Australia have nine Test matches before they leave for India and the results in those games could have a major impact on the final selection. The team management will monitor the players closely before finalising the squad for the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
