List of best figures for West Indies in T20 Internationals
McCoy produced a sublime spell and this provides CricBlog an ideal opportunity to explore the top five bowling performances by West Indian players in T20Is.
Obed McCoy: 6/17 vs India, 2022
Obed McCoy broke down the spine of the Indian batting line-up by dismissing openers Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in the opening three overs. However, his critical contribution came towards the fag end of the innings. India had staged a formidable comeback and looked fairly set to explode towards the end with 115/5 in 16.2 overs.
McCoy outsmarted Ravindra Jadeja first and then returned back to take three wickets in the 19th over including that of Dinesh Karthik. That ensured that India could score only 22 runs in the last 20 deliveries of the innings and even lost five wickets in that phase.
Keemo Paul: 5/15 vs Bangladesh, 2018
Keemo Paul delivered a fantastic spell of 5/15 in his quota of four overs in the decider to help West Indies clinch a 2-1 series victory vs Bangladesh in Mirpur in December 2018.
Evin Lewis’ 89 had powered the visitors to 190 runs in the first innings. However, Paul dismissed the likes of Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah to dismantle the Bangladeshi middle-order. He wiped away any hopes of a late comeback by sending back tailenders like Ariful Haque and Mohammed Saifuddin as well. More than the wickets, it was arguably Paul’s economical spell that further hampered Bangladesh’s chase.
Darren Sammy: 5/26 vs Zimbabwe, 2010
Zimbabwe had given West Indies a shock by winning the sole T20I between the two sides in February 2010. However, it was Darren Sammy’s five-wicket haul that stole the show before his side’s horrific batting outing. Zimbabwe were wiped out for 107 with seven of their batsmen getting dismissed for a duck.
Sammy dismissed the duo who put up some runs at least, namely: Hamilton Masakadza (44) and Elton Chigumbura (33). His other dismissals included the likes of Greg Lamb, Shingi Masakadza, and skipper Prosper Utseya. The fact that West Indies could put up only 79 runs at the loss of seven wickets in reply is a story for another day!
Jason Holder: 5/27 vs England, 2022
Jason Holder took a terrific five-wicket haul in merely 2.5 overs to enable West Indies seal a series victory in the decider fifth T20I vs England earlier this year. England’s 180-run chase was cut short by Holder’s timely dismissals of Moeen Ali in the 11th over. The all-rounder then returned to take a hat-trick in the 20th over to crush any hopes of an English revival.
He even topped that feat by taking a wicket on the fourth consecutive delivery of Saqib Mahmood. The target might have already slipped out of England’s radar by then but Holder’s feat helped the home team to properly stamp their authority over the series.
Oshane Thomas: 5/28 vs Sri Lanka, 2020
Oshane Thomas delivered a new-ball masterclass to roll over the Sri Lankan top-order in the opening T20I between the two sides in Pallekele a couple of years ago. Shehan Jayasuriya and Kusal Mendis were dismissed for a duck whereas Avishka Fernando was caught behind for seven in the second over. Thomas took the wickets of Angelo Matthews and Dasun Shanaka in the subsequent overs to round up his five-wicket haul in the powerplay itself.
Sri Lanka managed to mount a decent challenge nevertheless courtesy Kusal Perera (66) and Wanindu Hasaranga (44). However, Thomas’ effort was more than enough to take West Indies past the finishing line eventually.
