Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have pulled off the impossible, sealing their qualification into the IPL 2024 playoffs, sparking widespread reactions. After eight matches, the franchise was in no man’s land, heartbroken after a one-run defeat in Kolkata and a net run rate of -1.05.
But, six wins later, topped off by a 27-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), RCB take massive momentum into the playoffs. It is an extraordinary run underpinned by contributions right the way down the order – from the superb Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis to middle order heroes Cameron Green and Rajat Patidar. And crucially, the bowlers stepped up magnificently well in batting-friendly conditions.
Arguably the biggest feel-good story is that of Yash Dayal. Last season, he conceded five sixes in a row against Rinku Singh in Ahmedabad, leaving fans wondering how he would ever bounce back from such a day. But, on this day with the stakes so high, he delivered a superb final over to ensure RCB won by at least the 17 runs they needed to overtake CSK on net run rate.
Earlier, RCB hit the 200+ score they required courtesy of a middle overs shift in momentum thanks to Green and Patidar. Then, RCB created so many turning points in the field, none more so than Rachin Ravindra’s run out with Shivam Dube desperately struggling at the other end. Also, Faf du Plessis pulled off a stunning catch at a crucial time, while Glenn Maxwell produced a crucial all-round display.
Ravindra Jadeja (42* off 22) and MS Dhoni (25 off 13) tried their best, but the defending champions’ season is over.
Reactions: RCB storm into IPL 2024 playoffs after 27-run win over CSK
Here are some of the best reactions to one of the great IPL nights. “I want to dedicate my POTM award to Yash Dayal. He has a golden heart, not easy defending with the wet ball,” said captain Faf du Plessis.
RCB will take on either RR or SRH in the Eliminator, depending on Sunday’s results.
