The Big Bash League (BBL) season opener, pencilled in for December 12 in Chennai, has been met with strong demand. The opening allocation of tickets for the match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers were sold within half an hour.

Cricket Australia (CA) will release additional tickets in the coming weeks due to fan interest. It is something that will please not only CA, but also the players who will feature in the game.

Jason Behrendorff, who has featured in the IPL, knows how fantastic the atmosphere is for white-ball matches in India.

“Yeah, India’s obviously such an amazing place to play cricket and the fact that we get to play a Big Bash match there is going to be unreal,” Behrendorff told CricBlog last month.

“Hopefully there’s the same sort of support there is for CSK. I know how noisy it gets there…..Maybe there’s a few Dhoni fans that will come out and show us some support, but really looking forward to it. It’s a great opportunity.”

CA taking a BBL match to Chennai is part of the plan to privatise the competition. The Renegades are on the market and this match is an opportunity to test their appeal.

“From what I’ve seen in the IPL, (38,200) Indian fans will be pretty wild and probably an atmosphere I haven’t experienced,” said Renegades’ captain Will Sutherland.

“I am very excited to play in front of a full Indian stadium; hopefully, a lot of those fans will get behind the red team.”
