An iconic trio of Indian cricket will be seen together again in one-day international cricket. Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will all be together out in the middle at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Tuesday for the first time in an ODI match after over 32 months.

The last time all three played together in this format was on November 19, 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup. The trio hasn’t played an ODI together since that heartbreaking night against Australia and their return is one of the biggest talking points ahead of India’s campaign.

Bumrah’s absence was a result of careful workload management

The long gaps between Bumrah’s appearances were largely due to injury concerns and a carefully managed workload plan. A cautious approach was adopted by the BCCI regarding his participation in all formats following his recovery from a serious back problem where his body broke down due to the lumbar stress fracture in his lower back.

Test cricket and the format in which the next major ICC event was to be held were always given priority. The strategy was to reduce the physical load on the premier fast bowler so that recurrent break-downs could be avoided and peak fitness could be maintained for global tournaments.

This meant Bumrah’s outings in ODIs were few and far between in the last two and a half years, yet he played an essential part of the national side.

Attention Turns Towards the Next World Cup In 2027

Bumrah has been summoned back into the fifty-over setup, as India’s primary priority is now the upcoming ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. Along with batting mainstay Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, his return has brought India’s seasoned core back together at a crucial moment especially after such a disastrous T20s leg where India got whitewashed against both Ireland and England under new captain Shreyas Iyer.

The reunion is the start of India’s preparations for another shot at the world title. Prior to the marquee tournament, it is believed that this series will serve senior players valuable playing time as combinations settle and momentum increases towards the tournament in 2027.

Since that evening in Ahmedabad, a lot has changed, but one sight that has vanished away will be seen back on Tuesday 14th July. Bumrah, Rohit, and Kohli will once again wear India’s colors in ODI cricket at Edgbaston.
