Australia’s early exit from the T20 World Cup has opened the door for a number of players to potentially feature in the next round of the Sheffield Shield starting March 5.
One player who is likely to play is Cameron Green after the all-rounder had a difficult summer across the Test and T20 formats.
Cameron Green could play for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield before heading to the IPL
According to CODE Sports, Green is considered a strong chance of featuring for Western Australia against Queensland at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field.
Green endured a disappointing Ashes series. The all-rounder scored just 171 runs at an average of 24.42, with the nature of his dismissals drawing criticism. He also took four wickets at a hefty 70.75 runs per dismissal.
Green’s returns did not improve in the T20 World Cup. He scored 24 runs in three innings and did not bowl in Australia’s must-win match against Sri Lanka at Pallekele.
Should Green play in the Sheffield Shield match, it will almost certainly be his final red-ball outing before the Test series against Bangladesh in August. The all-rounder had a strong outing in the Shield just before the Ashes, hitting 94 against Queensland to seal his place in the Australian XI.
The 26-year-old will then feature for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, who purchased him for a whopping INR 25.20 crore (approx. AU $4.17 million). Green will receive approximately INR 18 crore (approx. AU $2.9 million) due to new BCCI regulations.
In 29 IPL matches, Green averages 41.6 at a strike rate of 153.7 with the bat, including an unbeaten hundred for Mumbai Indians. He’s also taken 16 wickets at 41.5 and an economy rate of 9.07.
In other news, Travis Head is a chance of featuring for South Australia in their next Sheffield Shield match, but he is likely to have a rest before the IPL. Also, Steve Smith won’t play for New South Wales, according to CODE Sports.
