Cameron Green is likely to miss the second Test against South Africa. He missed the first due to an abdominal strain he picked up in the third and final ODI in Potchefstroom on September 30.

Green was seen working on his fitness at Durban. However, he only returned to the nets yesterday (Thursday) and faced gentle throwdowns, before partaking in slip catching and a fitness session on the Gqeberha outfield.

“Maybe looking for the third Test” – Assistant coach Matthew Wade

Assistant coach Matthew Wade said the third Test in Cape Town is a more realistic timeframe for Green’s return.

“He’s here today. I’m not sure of his program, but he’ll be hitting over the next week and he started to get moving last Test,” Wade said, as quoted by Cricinfo. “I think maybe more looking for the third Test, but he’s starting to get moving, which is a positive sign.”

Should Green miss the Test, Australia may opt to keep the same XI that won convincingly in Durban. Nic Maddinson hit 48 as opener in the second innings, while Matt Renshaw produced the performance of his life at number five. However, there is the option of Josh Inglis, who faced Scott Boland and Michael Neser at full tilt in the centre-wicket net.

“He’ll [Inglis] start to push for this Test,” Wade said. “Whether his finger is 100% right for this Test, I’m not sure, but he’s looking to put himself on the frame.”

If Inglis plays, it will likely be for Beau Webster. But, Webster’s seam bowling could come in handy with rain forecast on the first two days and cool conditions expected for the entire match.
