The four playoff teams were confirmed with seven matches to spare in the 2025 IPL league stage. Mumbai Indians (MI) sealed their qualification after beating Delhi Capitals (DC) comfortably by 59 runs on May 21. This was MI’s seventh win from their past eight encounters.
While the top four teams are set, there is still interest regarding where Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and MI finish on the IPL table. Finishing first or second could prove crucial, evidenced by the fact that a top two team has gone on to win the title 14 times out of the 17 editions to date.
Can 4th placed Mumbai Indians still make the top 2?
Here is the current IPL table, as of 24th May:
Position | Team | Matches | Points | NRR |
1 | GT | 13 | 18 | 0.602 |
2 | PBKS | 12 | 17 | 0.389 |
3 | RCB | 13 | 17 | 0.255 |
4 | MI | 13 | 16 | 1.292 |
After RCB’s defeat against SRH on Friday, GT will seal a top two finish if they beat bottom-of-the-table CSK on Sunday in Ahmedabad.
Two wins for PBKS will see them finish top of the table. One win from their last two games can still be enough to finish in the top two, depending on how RCB fare against LSG. If PBKS and RCB win one game each, it will come down to net run rate.
So, Mumbai Indians need a lot to go their way to finish in the top 2. Along with beating PBKS at Jaipur to take them to 18 points, MI require two of the following scenarios to happen:
- CSK beat GT.
- RCB lose their last match against LSG.
- PBKS lose to DC.
Let’s take the scenario of LSG beating RCB and PBKS losing to DC. If MI then beat PBKS, MI will finish second thanks to their superior net run rate.
Here is how the final table would look:
Position | Team | Matches | Points | NRR |
1 | GT | 14 | 20 | TBC |
2 | MI | 14 | 18 | TBC |
3 | RCB | 14 | 18 | TBC |
4 | PBKS | 14 | 17 | TBC |
The IPL playoffs are scheduled to begin with Qualifier 1 on Thursday 29th May at Mullanpur.
