Cricket News: “Where is everyone?” – Disappointing crowd for AUS vs WI 1st T20 | Reactions to the low crowd in AUS vs WI 1st T20 at Carrara
T20 World Cup fever is heating up around the cricketing world, but that wasn’t exactly the case in Australia’s first home T20I of the season against West Indies in Gold Coast. Sights of the red seats dominated the coverage, providing a reminder of how cricket was played behind closed doors for a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It would have been unrealistic to expect a huge crowd for a mid-week T20I against opposition who need to qualify for the main round of the World Cup, but the number of empty seats is still a disappointing sight ahead of such a big and exciting season. The Gold Coast isn’t exactly the city where locals flock in to watch live sport, but the lack of marketing and awareness, confirmed by fans, has contributed to the low crowd.

One tweet read “The Gold Coast is a dead spot for sport. Throw in the very little promotion to stick the boot in and this is your result.” Another tweet in the same thread held similar views, reading “I’m like an hour and a bit away from the Gold Coast in Brisbane and I didn’t even know the game was on until this morning. There’s been no ads that I’ve seen.”
It is estimated that about 5,000 fans turned up for the match.
“Why’s the whole crowd dressed in red”, read a tweet. “Must be 150 fans”, read another.
Australia eventually prevailed with one ball to spare courtesy mainly of Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch. However, the hosts were lucky to come away with the win, with two dropped catches in the final over costing the Windies victory.
