Cricket News: Faf du Plessis stunning admission on former SA captain Daryll Cullinan | Faf du Plessis on Daryl Cullinan
Former South African skipper Faf du Plessis has spilled the beans on a rather unfortunate dressing room encounter with his childhood hero Daryll Cullinan in the early days of the former’s career.
Du Plessis explained that he went and sat next to Cullinan in the dressing room of the franchise that was formed by merging the provincial teams of Northern Titans and the Easterns. Dave Nosworthy and Cullinan were the coach and captain respectively of that side.
Faf reveals that he was in awe upon seeing the now 55-year-old and he took his kitbag and went and sat next to him in order to absorb as much information and insight that he could from him.
“As I was taught at Affies, I greeted him with a respectful “hello, sir”,” the 38-year-old writes in his upcoming autobiography Faf – Through Fire.
“What the f**k are you doing next to me? Why the f**k are you sitting here?,” the 55-year-old told the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper, as reported by The Citizen.
“Youngster, take your bag and f**k off! Jacques Rudolph is a Test player, and he’s not even sitting next to me. He sits on a chair, but you sit on a f**king sofa,” Cullinan further embarrassed the ex-Protea captain.
He then added, “Take your bag and sit in the bath. You don’t deserve to sit here.” Du Plessis then said that this incident turned Cullinan into a zero from a hero in his eyes at that very moment.
Faf pledged that he resolved that day to never speak to anyone the way Cullinan did to him that day. He appreciated South African stalwart Graeme Smith for ensuring that such an environment didn’t exist in the dressing room once Faf was introduced to Smith’s leadership.
Cullinan played 70 Tests in his eight-year-long international career and scored 4554 runs at an average of 44.21 with 14 centuries and 21 half-centuries to his name.
