Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando have been fined 25% of their match fees after an animated altercation on the first day of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday. Both players were also handed one demerit point for their part in the incident.
The encounter had come soon after Fernando had sent Jaiswal back to the dressing hut on the first morning. The two players were skating toward each other and made head contact, which is why the exchange was quickly noticed.
The ICC subsequently found both players guilty of inappropriate physical contact under its Code of Conduct. It was an incident in a crucial start to the Test match with India looking to build on their 1-0 lead in the series.

That was after Asitha Fernando bowled Jaiswal out with the last ball of the 17th over. Jaiswal was walking back toward the dressing room when he turned back and walked to the Sri Lankan fast bowler.
The two players exchanged words by the pitch before things got physical. According to an ICC statement, “Fernando moved his head toward Jaiswal who leaned forward and their heads made contact. In response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in their heads making contact.”
Both players were found to have committed a Level 3 breach of Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to inappropriate physical contact with another player during an international match. Neither player had a similar offense that resulted in a demerit point in the previous 24 months. A Level 1 offense could lead to a reprimand, a fine of up to 50% of the match fee and one or two demerit points.
Jaiswal made 45 off 53 balls and was the second wicket to fall for India at 66. Later Fernando also dismissed Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja, and the pace bowler finished the first innings with figures of 4/106 off 29 overs as India piled up 503/9d.
