Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has said that it is difficult to find an area of weakness in Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s T20 batting. The 32-year-old scored 68 runs off 40 deliveries though the Indian batting unit faltered for 133/9 in 20 overs in their group stage encounter against South Africa in Perth on Sunday.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Fleming explored the Mumbai Indians’ player’s batting technique in length and provided some detailed insights into the same.

Suryakumar has a very open and aggressive stance – Fleming

“He just has a really positive mindset. And he has a very open and aggressive stance which allows him to play a lot of unusual areas. So he’s sort of created a technique which bowlers are finding it hard to find the right lengths [against] because if they’re full he’ll hit all the way over cover or around; if they’re fractionally short he’ll go over third man and point,” the former New Zealand skipper was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.

Fleming added, “And anything straight, he’s very good with the short ball. So he’s developed a technique that’s very hard to find an area of weakness [in].”

In the same show, ex-South African skipper Faf du Plessis also explained that bowlers cannot really tie down Suryakumar in certain, specific areas as he can pull off shots in many different areas of the field. Faf hailed his calmness as he never appears to be rushed or frenetic despite having so many shots at his disposal.

“He knows when to pull that trigger, go through the gears, and he just always looks calm. He’s just a fantastic T20 player to watch. He’s the perfect guy that as a youngster you look at how you go through different gears at different stages of the game,” Faf further opened up on his thoughts on Suryakumar.

The batsman has been in a phenomenal touch since making debuting in T20Is in February 2021. In 37 matches, he has scored 1179 runs at an average and strike rate of 40.66 and 177.03 respectively with 11 half-centuries and a century to his name as well. He demonstrated some incredible dynamism in going about his innings in a testing track in Perth against an on-fire South African pace attack on Sunday.
